Yeah I can host you in my dorm room (free), but there are a few logistcal issues that shouldn't be a huge problem.

1. Guests are only allowed to stay for 3 days.

My next-door neighbors ahve done parkour with me and one of them is from philly. They said that they'd be fine with you staying one night there and then swtching back to my room if you are.

2. There is only one key to my room.

We'll have to workout our schedules so that you can go do stuff during the day and I can go to classes and then we can meet back up at the same time. The door to the building and the bathrooms use a cardkey, and I have an extra so you could borrow that.

3. Meals are served at the cafeteria, but there are plenty of places around to get meals on-campus. I have a mealplan and don't have much money so I'll be eating most of my meals at the caf.

4. We'll be traveling by bus/public transit.

The bus is $2.25 one way with a transfer included. They don't give change, but if you say that all you have is a 5 they'll usually just let you on.

K I think that's it. Let me know if you have an questions/concerns.

Hey, I'm looking around at places to stay, and I had a few questions you guys might be able to answer:

1. How's the public transportation system? I've looked at TheBus.org, but they don't have a global map and some of their routes seem to be morning / evening commuting only, so I don't have a sense of how easy it is to go places by bus and how long it usually takes..

2. I was looking at places to stay in Hawaii Kai or in Kailua; is it likely to be totally unpractical for getting around into downtown Honolulu if we don't rent a car? Is parking expensive or difficult downtown?

Thanks!

I travel almost exclusively by bus, and there are a few things to do.

1. Unless you're really interested, don't try to figure out the bus system. It's complicated. What I do is I go on Google Maps, and choose where I'm leaving from and going to, and then switch to the public transportation option. Then you can modify in the options what time you want to arrive/leave by. Way easier than using thebus.org.

2. If you have a cellphone with internet, you can go to hea.thebus.org, and put in either the intersection or bus stop # that you're at, and it'll give you a list of which buses will be arriving and when. Most buses have GPS, so HEA is accurate to 2 minutes.

3. If you're staying in kailua, the bus ride to Ala Moana is 45 minutes to an hour. Hawaii Kai is 30 to 45 minutes. Sometimes traffic gets really bad though and it can be longer. I only know about parking in Waikiki and Ala Moana. Waikiki is incredibly difficult to find free parking in, and Ala Moana has the huge mall there with free parking so there it's really easy. It really depends on where you're going downtown.

4. Bus rides can be long and infrequent, or they can be short and frequent, or any combination. Once again it really depends on where you'll be going and what time of the day it'll be.  In most cases there won't be a significant change in the bus schedule from morning to evening. It's after 10 p.m. that the schedules start to get more sporadic.

Hope that helped, good luck.

Hi I'm Ryan, been living in Hawaii all my life.  Always been an island boy, always will be.  Throw any other questions at me that you've got!!!

if you're used to buses being on time, you'll probably be disappointed.  I used to catch the bus before I got my car...seriously sucks, they're always too late or early.  The reason is because the bus drivers bend backwards to be nice to the multitude of old people who catch the bus and will frequently wait a extra minute or two for the regular elderly people who catch the bus on their routes.  This process adds up to a schedule which is basically useless, if you come to Oahu and expect people to be on time you'll be unpleasantly surprised... we live on Hawaiian time.

to answer your second question... it depends.  What is a normal commute to you?  If it takes me longer then 30mins to get from waikiki to Hawaii kai (6-7 miles) I'm usually grumpy cause that means there's traffic.  Actually I usually consider a long drive anything longer then 45mins, so if you're normal commute is 2 hrs I'm sure what I consider heavy traffic might seem like nothing to you.  Parking can be expensive in downtown...but honestly why would you be down there?  It's Hawaii...don't you wanna get away from the city?  In Waikiki (where I work), as long as you're doing the whole tourist thing (dining/shopping where you park) parking can be free or basically free with parking validation...a good tip to use is just be friendly with parking people and they'll pay you back in kind (they want you to have a good experience and come back, plus we like talking story with people down here, it's a good way to find out about stuff that's going down that you might wanna check out).

Also about renting a car, it really depends on personal preference.  Do you mind relaxing and waiting an extra 15-20mins for a bus that's late?  Or are you the kind of person that needs to be on time for everything, even when you're on vacation?  What are you coming down here for?  1.parkour 2.relax? 3.party? 4.explore?  it's hard to say if you should rent a car or not if I don't quite know what you're trying to get out of your visit down here.  Where do you wanna go?  I'm guessing that you don't wanna just come down to Hawaii for parkour and downtown...we've got so many beautiful things to share on the other side of the island (North shore/West Side).

Thanks for the invite C.T. but it seems like I'd be putting you and me through an awful lot of trouble. Plus I'm already considering a hostel in Waikiki that'll run me about $100 all four nights.

On the same note as renting cars, what about renting bicycles? I'd be willing to leave early and bike to locations if I knew I could get a decent bike at a decent price during my stay.

haha no clue, I'll ask around... just a note of caution though.  Hawaii drivers were only recently "highly encouraged" to share the road with cyclists, so not very bike friendly IMO.  We are still lacking in bike lanes for most of main roads...reason, real estate is ridiculously expensive and space is limited on an island so making room for an extra yard or two of roadway (for a bike lane) is pretty expensive to do.  I used to bike to school to save gas money, but respect for cyclists was so poor that I ended up deciding that my safety wasn't worth the $$ I saved...my friends who bike as a mode of transportation have had similar experiences.  To illustrate my point, the University of Hawaii Athletic program actually "highly encouraged" (unofficially banned) players from using mopeds and bikes cause athletes kept getting injured from crash related injuries.  One of my friends has actually gone through 2 bikes (on his 3rd) during his 4 years of college...not cause of regular wear and tear...but cause drivers don't check blind spots for cyclists.

But, in any case I'm sure someone would always be willing to give you a ride to the jams while you're here.  My car is usually full, cause I give rides to traceurs in the area.  Looking forward to meeting you gabe

Thanks for the info, guys! We'll take your advice and check out the other sides of the island before the jam ;D
I'll also go for the bus and its relaxed approach to going places, as I'm a fan of public transportations anyways.
Looking forward to meeting you all!

Sad news: I don't think I am going to make it :( Finances are not working out right now. This is a huge shame because a trip to Hawaii in the middle of January would be a huge treat for this Wisconsin girl, especially if there was parkour involved.

I was so looking forward to seeing everyone.

Guess I'll keep trying to find that golden egg-laying goose.

as though there were some obstacle in the way;
and yet: as though, once it was overcome,
she would be beyond all walking, and would fly.

Training is not about instant gratification. Anyone looking for constant progress will not stick with training for long. The essence of training is the experience of the training, and what you learn about yourself through it.

There's no turning back now...

My plane tickets are bought and my hostel room is reserved - I'm staying at the Honolulu University hostel, right across the street from the campus. (2323 Seaview Avenue I believe)

Where are other people staying? Because I'd like to know who I can hitch a ride with or maybe meet up with during my stay.

I'm sure giving people rides shouldn't be a big deal though

Amanda and I are renting a car after all, so we'll be able to drive some people around during the jam. Mike has already requested a spot, but there will be room for 2 more. We're staying at the hostel in Waikiki. Amanda votes for going to the waterfalls and lookout!
