There are many protein bars that taste like chocolate bars and are delicious. If you have to do anything else besides enjoying them as a treat, then you probably picked a terrible brand and should spend a bit more time trying other types.

You should just make your own. Its really easy to do and they taste great. Not to mention it tends to be more affordable then buying them individually.

Sorry long holiday weekend :D

3.5 cups quick oats
5 scoops protein powder
4Tbsp Natural Peanut Butter
1 cup Fat free Milk

Mix in a bowl. I use a wood spoon and mix the hell out of it. Its almost a workout doing this hehe. Then take a 9x9 pan(i use glass casserole dish) and lightly coat with cooking spray. Spread mix evenly into pan. Cut into 4 pieces for meal replacement or 8 pieces for a snack.

Rough Nutritional data for 8 portions per batch.
Calories:249.6
Fat:8.1g
Protein:23.4g
Carbs:28.5g
Fiber:3.3g
These will of course differ based on the ingredients used. Obviously using whole milk is going to up the fat and calorie content.

I have tweaked it a bit myself but that is the base recipe for protein bars. I use vanilla protein powder. Tried chocolate once and it wasn't to bad. I have also switched out a half cup of oats for milled flaxseed.

Enjoy and have fun experiementing.

Oh yeah I usually cut up and package my bars in tin foil. I lightly spray the foil with cooking spray to avoid sticking and then store them in the freezer. Pull one out as necessary.... takes around 30 min to thaw enough to eat. Hope that helps

Ken,

Do you refrigerate or freeze the bars after putting them in the pan? How long do you allow them to set? I'm going to try this tonight!

Thanks

I just eat the protein bar coupled with some veggies or fruit. Cliff bars are nice... I used to cook my own as well :) After wrapping the portions with aluminum, you can easily store it in the fridge.
Another alternative to using a 9x9 pan, is cutting 8 squares of aluminum foil (about 8"x10"), spraying a light coat of canole/olive oil inside, and pouring the mix in equal portions. This way you won't need to cut and foil the bars into separate pieces after they're done cooking.
Training is not about instant gratification. Anyone looking for constant progress will not stick with training for long. The essence of training is the experience of the training, and what you learn about yourself through it.

You can freeze them or place them in the refrigerator. If you freeze them to long it will be hard as hell to cut them. I usually refrigerate them for about an hour or so and then cut and package them, and store them in freezer. If you do toss them into the freezer and forget about them its not a problem. Just pull the pan out and set on counter for like 30-60 min. They will thaw enough to cut them up.

As for pouring them out good luck. This particular mixture gets THICK. It basically comes out in giant ball and you have to apply force to spread it evenly in the pan.  You could of course add more milk to thin it out but it makes for a very gooey sticky bar :D

Oh and a word of warning. If you store them in the freezer DO NOT try to quick thaw them in the microwave. It doesn't take much for the oats to cook and you end up with a dry fluffy rather gross tasting bar  :-\

Heh. Figures. This is totally something a girl would think of. Way to go, girlfriend! ;)

I don't dig on protein bars much, personally. I prefer to get my protein in meal form; if I'm on the go or if it's PWO I'll just do a protein shake. I carry shaker bottles with me everywhere, with the protein powder measured out. All I have to do is add water or milk and I'm good to go. Alternatively, beef jerky or hard-boiled eggs, or yogurt.

Having said that, homemade protein bars are a good option.

Nope no cooking necessary... just mix it in a bowl and then go from there. The milk is enough to soften up the quick oats if your worried about your bars being crunchy.

5 scoops protein powder

How much is a "scoop"? I buy my powder from the bulk section of the grocery store, so I have to measure it out with normal measuring cups and stuff.
