Starting flips soon: NEED HELP!
« on: September 02, 2009, 05:24:17 PM »
Hey everyone, I'm decent at PK (vaults, landings, rolls, I condition frequently, etc.), and decided to learn flips to help with fear. Anyway, I have several questions:

What flip should I start with/Which is the easiest?

How do I train it? (detail, please)

Where should I train it?

Lastly, do I need any prior skills to do said flip?

That's all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think sideflips are the easiest to learn.
i like sideflips because you can spot the ground on take off and when landing.
if you have access to a tumble track at an open gym or something like that, id suggest running fast and just chucking it onto a mat. for most common flips, if you commit, you'll eventually land it. also go UP THEN flip, don't tuck to early.
I like Tricking and Free Running, i don't think i actually do parkour, because i do it for fun and self expression, which would change the term to free running.

Well remember that when you're doing flips it's not just about chucking yourself into a rotation, remember to jump up and then tuck it will get you much higher and give you time to land.  I agree with Steve that sideflips are the easiest to learn, then backflips, and then fronts.

Can someone help with how to get over fear of flips? I know how to execute them, I just have fear of failing. Any help is appreciated.

Sideflips are certainly one of the easiest, but not necessarily where you should start.  A backflip will be the easiest to learn, but front flips will probably be easier for you to get yourself to do.  If you can find a gym with a trampoline or foam pit, that will help tremendously.  If you can find a trampoline, start looking up tutorials for a backflip and prepare yourself to do one, then find someone who knows how to spot, and have them spot you for the back tuck.  Once you have it solid on the trampoline without bouncing, take it to a tumble track, and then the floor.  This process will work with most flips.  Front flips you can usually just throw right away, then modify the technique, just remeber to go up and tuck.

i just learned front flips and their pretty easy. when you jump if you bounce it may help you it does with me. but when you flip throw your arms down and grab your knee-ish area to help rotate.

Ok.  this is not my thread.    but i have the same problem.   i want to learn how  to flip.   but i have no access  to anything such as trampolines   or  going to  a gym   or anything like that.  the closest thing  i can get too  is doing flips into a pool.   but even  thats unlikely  for me to get too one.

any ideas?

What about taking the matress off your bed and lying it on the floor for a certain period of time? That or just not moving the bed at all. In my situation learning flips I simply kept my bed there and practiced rotating onto my bed. I could not fully rotate because my bed was so high, but I got the fear of flipping frontwards, sideways, and backwards out of my head.

You can find a matress on Craigs List, Ebay, or at a local store for pretty cheap, although I would not recommend just going out and buying one!

And about the gym or trampoline... you will go to any lengths to reach your goal, and I mean ANY lengths! You have to want it more than anything!

just try a flip and be like," well if i get hurt i know i did something wrong." thats how i started and got over my fear of flips. i can still only do a front but im not afraid to try backs/sides, but id rather get my fronts down first.

Today I dedicated to just learning the fron flip.

I took a sleeping bag and folded it in half. Then added 3 pillows on top of it in a row (not stack) And this really helped me wiith fear.
(I still have yet to land it)

I learned that it is almost impossible to land on your head if you go for it.

Its been 3 hours and Well...I'm still working on it...

But if you want to try that than go ahead. If you mess up you wont feel a thing.

I've decided to try frontflips first, as I feel most comfortable with those. I feel like I can actually get myself to do it. Is this a good decision?

yes you have to jump off the proverbial ledge sometime. just practice on the ground to learn proper technique. ;D

I tried today, got farther rotations than ever, but I landed on my tailbone and it still hurts to run after about an hour. :(

If you're tailbone's hurting, you may have bruised it, so I'd hold off on the flips for now. The last thing you wanna do right now is land on it again  ;)

Backflips are actually easier to learn for most people than front flips (in my experience), so you may want to actually start with those. Especially since you have 3 other teammates who can spot you (they are much easier to spot than frontflips; find Urban Current's tutorial on it).
Your obstacle is my shortcut.

Okay! I'll try backflips as soon as my tailbone is recuperated. Thanks for all your help, everyone!
