Hand Spring Vault
« on: July 28, 2006, 04:13:33 PM »
I just thought of something, I haven't really tested it but if you had the upper body strength it seems like you would be able to do kind of diving handspring type thing to get over something that you couldn't kong or whatever.

I've seen some freerunners do this.  Kinda showy and impressive to watch, but nothing more to it, really.

well think about it if you kong it you might not reach far enough but if you hand spring that way if you got good at it you could pretty much at your enitre body length, then some.

...Wha...?  You mean distance after the rail?  Some people can get 8-10 feet after a kong.  Or before, do you mean?  Cause diving kongs and double kongs seem more efficient.

He's talking about height.  The thing is that it would take ALOT of upper body to handspring over something higher than you can kong.

i usually find that handsprings off a height are possible to about the same height, sometimes barely more than just a monkey.  but then again, its uglier, less efficient, and the landing is precarious :)

I like to do handspring vaults not only because it's just cool being upside down and pouncing off an obstacle but I also have a purpose for it. I found a place where there is a 4 foot high wall. The width of the wall is about a foot and a half. On the other side is a 5 foot gap to a higher ledge (about 3 feet higher than the 4 foot wall). I can't do another vault (except tic-tac-ing) that gives me enough distance with enough height to make the gap. Plus, once again, it just feels good.  ;)

I just thought that I should probably add that when I'm talking about doing a handspring, I'm talking about a round off. I like the round off more because it is safer and you can add a 180 at the end for a handspring-reverse vault.

i think that if the thing you go over in a kong and it's too long you would have to turn it into a kash vualt. The diving kong would be very hard to turn into a hand spring vualt because you are horozontal. A kash could get you that extra distance you need easy. You could even just turn the kong into a dive roll. Besides it would be hard to see where you are gonna land with the handspring and you might hit ur back.

You can also get more lift out of it because when you turn into the 180 roundoff you can push yourself farther than a regular front handspring would throw you and its for a better recovery

One word, Gym, practice in a gym.  I did it on a picnic table and tweaked myself.  I find hand spring vaults are fun in videos but they can be risky.  I would use a Kong or just a spin vault.

you can turn it into a kash or diveroll easier to get that extra distance than you can turn it into a handspring.

That would be awesome. Imagine seeing someone reach the end of their kong and then all the sudden flip their legs over and go another 3 feet. I bet matt could do it, since his doubles throw his feet so high.

A properly done front handspring requires almost no upper body strength. Just good blocking technique from a power active shoulders.

Anyway, I don't quite get what you were trying to get at... if there was a good picture demonstration, for example, that would help. Otherwise, I don't think it's that optimal at all. :P

this is not at all efficient, but i recently started working on a kong to front flip it is kinda similar except you have to wait for your feet to clear the wall before you can tuck also ive done the same thing with a side tuck. it isn't efficient but it looks very cool. 8)
