Jobs/Careers
« on: August 11, 2009, 08:01:16 PM »
Out of curiosity, is anyone on the forums planning to go into a job that requires parkour, or in which they can use parkour pretty regularly? Has anyone fallen so much in love with parkour that they decided to forgo all plans for the future and find a job that would allow them to do parkour and get paid for it? And does anyone think that maybe if parkour was your job, you would get sick of it because you have to do it every single day and maybe you have a mean boss or the pay is lousy and you would start to not love parkour as much?
-Side note: Before I settled on my current career choice, I was really sure I wanted to move to Hollywood and become a professional stuntwoman. There aren't a lot of stuntwomen around, and the movies always need more women to jump out of cars and run across rooftops, etc. I was reading an article somewhere where for one scene in some movie, a male stuntman had to put on a blonde wig and do stunts because they didn't have a female to do it, and...a girl was supposed to be doing it in the movie. However, my career choice has now changed, but if it doesn't work out, maybe I'll just drop out of college and go do parkour for a living!

Well, let me know your thoughts on this, I'm very interested.

I plan on running my own parkour gym when I get older 0-o. Does that count? Other than that, I'ma be a Physical Therapist. Doing parkour inspired this goal.

I'm thinking of becoming a personal trainer or the like, but I also really want to travel, so I've thought about becoming a sort of Jack of all Trades type so I can travel unburdened. Teaching English in other countries is a decent way to earn cash, I could moonlight as a street performer or whatnot, and there's an innumerable amount of little odd jobs one could do to make money.

But I'll still probably have a 'base' so to speak here... I might open a gym of my own, or start a small personal trainer business or something.

I'm a teacher. I use parkour in my job every single day.
She followed slowly, taking a long time,
as though there were some obstacle in the way;
and yet: as though, once it was overcome,
she would be beyond all walking, and would fly.

I wish to become a medical doctor.  While my job may require me to use parkour if I need to rush across the hospital if someone flat lined or something, I doubt I'll be using it much.  I will at least be able to practice the philosophy of parkour.

Military career for me. Air Force specifically, as a paratrooper.

That means lots of running, ducking, dodging, and falling.

This is something i have been thinking about a lot lately, because when school starts, i will be a junior in HS. One of my hobbys is building bass guitars from scratch, so maybe I might be a luthier (someone who builds stringed instruments). However, there are only a hand full of people wanting a custom made instrument, so I will probably do this as an on-the-side job out of my garage.
As a main job, I want something important, that has meaning, that makes a difference. Something that would make things different the next day, instead of a job where everything is same the next day, that it didn't really matter if the job got done or not. Something that helps people. Also something that wasn't boring, where i actually get to move around and that wasn't the same thing over and over and over. A few days ago, thew idea of being a paramedic came into my head. I still don't know what i want to do, but i can't see any downside to being a paramedic (or something simalar.) I think there are a few good oppertunities for parkour in this.

The only downside I would think of being a paramedic, is the chance of having to witness someone dieing or die. It may traumatize you :/..

Im thinking of trying to become a stunt man, or maybe act in action movies/scenes. It would be a dream job to spend my life doing parkour/martial arts as my job. And i love making movies so it would be perfect.

Going for a college degree in Health Promotion/Fitness Management, with a minor in Journalism.

Odd pairing you say?

Well, my idea is to write about the health/wellness/fitness industry...from within the industry. My dream is to write full time for a magazine like Men's Health or to write books and have columns. And if I could become something like the official writer of parkour/freerunning media (books, articles, movies, etc.), I'd be set. I've already gotten started by writing for APK. *inserts shameless plug for my RISE fictional series, Forgotten Movements series (Vol-3 coming very soon) and my Progress Eternal essay*

lol, My mom (of all people) figured out my path as a Park designer (She said that Traceurs/Traceuses are perfect for this because we see the flow of the landscape, and when something flows, no matter if you do PK or not, it just looks good...

So, since I've always liked Drafting, she made the connection and I think I'll design urban-scapes and secretly make them perfect for Parkour...  Oh and also, we (The team) are planning to start a gym/PK Park (A huge one)

Cognitive Behavioral / Developmental Psychologist... I guess maybe research the natural mechanisms in the brain that effectively tell us "no we shouldn't, that's dangerous" when our parkour training tells us yes we can.  No actual parkour, but I guess I could freak out my professor by QMing whenever I move around the lab?

I'm joining the Marines just for the training, but I'm in college majoring in professional aviation. As a pilot, I really cannot do a lot with PK except try and not miss my flight. :P

If I could I would love to be a field agent for the FBI, but we will just see where it all goes...

And whoever said they wanted to open a parkour gym, lets talk. I wanna help you because I want to start one too and it'll be easier having a co-founder pay for half.
