Is this true? :(
« on: July 29, 2009, 05:33:10 PM »
So ive had several people today tell me my height(6ft. 3inch) is to tall to learn any type of gymnastics or do parkour...I am also trying to lose weight for the purpose of doing parkour because ive always loved the smooth art form(If you cant tell, im new to this haha) So is it true that my height will hold me back from getting good?

I don't really know about this; however, I've seen some pretty tall people do some pretty amazing things.

People in that video look tall and I don't think they're having much of a problem.

You'll get their if you really want to. It might take more time than others but I quote “Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.” -John Quincy Adams.

When you're training make sure you're training right. Not training right is like being on a canoe in the middle of a lake without a paddle and blind folded. Study on the forum and get the recommended books like starting strength and such. Listen to Chris and Steve as well. They are the gurus here and have a lot of stickies posted. They can help you with almost any questions you have.

Being tall can be helpful as a traceur for things like wall runs.

Gymnastics you will have a tough time, but when you do get stuff it's rewarding.

You make do with what you've been given.

I have been browsing and made my own goals and work-out plan along with a very good diet. I also quit smoking. For now i stick to the basics...Regular training, Landings, Rolls(Which are easy because ive had Brazilian jiu-jitsu training) but i am weighing about 265 right now and im 6,3...It will be awhile before i can really do anything good.

You are never too big or small for anything.  You may not be the best EVER but you can certainly DO anything with a lot of work...more work than others for some things and less work than others for other things.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses.  Find your strengths and exploit them.  Identify your weaknesses and eliminate them.

Well said.

I'm about 6ft 2 and I don't have too much trouble with things. I can move perfectly fine, I don't have a problem with PK. As for tricking, it does take a bit of work since you have more body to work with and more mass to rotate. etc...

Parkour is about learning how to move with your body, given your own physical abilities, skills, and strengths.  How can your own body be too tall for this?

You absolutely can. You're are just moving your body through you're environment. Parkour should be a very personal experience. If you take the mindset of freedom to heart, then in my opinion you just as much deserving of the term traceur as the next man.

So move at your own pace and don't worry about comparing yourself:)

Being tall doesn't make it impossible.  It just makes it harder.  It doesn't stop me and don't let it stop you.

You never stop working on your landings.  Move on to more stuff as you feel comfortable, but never stop training a movement for another. :)

Seek out qualified instructors in your area.  I started out on my own, but after two months I started attending jams that were between 1-4 hours away at least once a month.  I can't afford classes, and don't always get much chance to get quality instruction from people who know what they're teaching, but training with other people has made all the difference.  I can't recommend it enough.  The friendships and the skills I've gained by being willing to travel for parkour are priceless.

You work on landings your whole entire life. Every time you train, train landings. Period.

As to when you "can" move on to other skills, I'd say move on to them as soon as you feel comfortable with your body moving. When you feel "conditioned" for it. Your body will know when you're ready. I wouldn't work on just one skill at a time before moving on to the next thing if I were you. As to what to work on next, it's hard to say. The thing about training is, your training environment will dictate which skills you work on. If there is a wall there, work on wall runs and cats. If there are rails there, work on balance, vaults, etc. This, of course, after you've properly warmed up and drilled landings and rolls. :)

And "too tall/too small" is a bunch of crap. Like others have said, some things may be harder or easier for you because of your height, but the only thing that can truly make parkour training impossible is being dead.
She followed slowly, taking a long time,
as though there were some obstacle in the way;
and yet: as though, once it was overcome,
she would be beyond all walking, and would fly.
