Maui Channel Swim

Maui Channel Swim is a 9.4 mile relay from Club Lanai on Lanai to Black Rock on Ka'anapali, Maui. It's the world's longest open water relay. "This channel is clear, warm, beautiful, open water notorious for its swift currents."

I was standing behind a guy who did this in 2007 - had the shirt on. We got to talking. Sure it's not parkour, but it WOULD qualify as your MN workout for the day ;D

How it works: Team of 6 swimmers. Each swims 30 minutes. If you aren't finished in 3 hours, you take turns swimming 10 minute shifts until you finish.

Get a team of 6 - then it's only about 1.7 miles each [average]. That's doable for you.

My legs started to cramp after only 500m yesterday... but that was after 4 mi run or so. I'll let you know when I can swim 2 miles freestyle. I think it's going to take more than a month ;D

haha ya it seems like it would be a cool experience to do tho.
maybe i can find some ppl at crossfit who would be down for it

im thinking of doing the waikiki rough water in october(i think thats when it is)

2.38 miles... a bit farther than you normally go. Still, that's like training 10 mile runs, then running a marathon. Ok. That might be a bad simile. ;D I hope swimming 2.38 miles isn't as hellish as running 26. Since the Waikiki Roughwater and Honolulu Marathon were 2/3 of the original Ironman... it may be.

For my first marathon, I intentionally took off near the back of the pack [9:00 mile pace people], so I constantly had slower people to pass. Other ones had more people, so if I had started that slow, it would have taken me forever to get through them. For swimming, it's going to be worse, because you can't get too close to the guy in front of you - or you'll get kicked. I think I would start on the outside edge. People are going to be pressing inside, toward the first marker. The outside edge may not be as crowded. You'll have to swim farther, though.

Whatever you decide Ian, good luck man, you are coming up a long way with your cardio, that will allow you to do pretty much everything you want in terms of training.

well i could wear the Navy Seal/Navy Diver swim shorts

ENTRY FEE:  The entry fee for a team is $720.00.  The entry fee for an individual/solo swimmer is $140.00. 
ESCORT BOATS:  Each team is responsible for negotiating the price of an escort boat and paying for its charter.  The average fee is $500.00 - $700.00 per boat. 
ENTRY DEADLINE: All entries must be received by Friday, July 24, 2009.  If received after this date, the entry fee will be $820.00 for a team and $180.00 for an individual/solo.

1.1.   An official team may be entered by six individuals, or as an individual.  Individual swimmers (maximum of ten individual swimmers) must meet        qualification times to assure completion of the event, please submit your 2,000 time for review, (minimum 40 minutes for a 2,000).  There will be a 5 hour cutoff finish time for all solo swimmers.  If you are not able to complete this distance in 5 hours, please do not enter.

1.2.   All swimmers must be at least 19 years old.  Date of birth for each team member will be listed on the entry form.  There are six (6) swimmers to a team.  Swimmers are advised that they may jeopardize their amateur standing under FINA rule GR1, if they participate in Masters competition.  There are no age group divisions for the individual category.

1.3.   All participants must be currently registered with U.S. Masters Swimming.  If a team’s Official Entry and Roster Form does not indicate each team member’s 2009 U.S. Masters Swimming Registration number, they will not be accepted or allowed to compete.  Foreign swimmers may compete if they are registered with their FINA-approved governing body.  A team shall be comprised of six swimmers.  APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT A COPY OF U.S. MASTERS SWIMMING REGISTRATION NUMBER.

1.4.   Each team or individual swimmer must be accompanied by an appropriate escort boat flying a team flag, approximately 3 feet by 5 feet.  All teams are to display a banner or sign on the side of their boat with the team name.
