Fun challenges
« on: July 18, 2009, 12:42:46 PM »
Okay, a couple things I've thought about, or tried recently.  Someone oughta get these!

1) One ring muscle up.  Using both arms, only one ring.  Tyson Cecka's idea.  I took it to the gym @ UC Berkeley and none of the PK or gymnastics folks could get it.  Some tried with hands on the bottom of the ring, others with one hand on top, one on bottom.  Everyone got stuck with one elbow up and had no idea what to do next.

2) Clapping muscle ups.  <--- I'm searching youTube for this right now.  Bar-barians, Bartendaz... someone must have done this.  EDIT: BAM!!!! at 3:21-3:26 he does 2 consecutive MU's and claps his head!  Always something to shoot for!

Steve has done 1 ringed muscle ups.

I can do clapping MUs with a kip, though I don't think I have done it in a while.

By the by, I am always up for more challenges if you got them :P

Both are pretty easy...

To be fair though you need to probably be able to dip close to your own bodyweight to press the 1 ring muscle up because you will be leaning to one side of the strap at an awkward angle. Thus, one of your triceps is going to get the majority of trying to push your bodyweight on the dip part of the movement.

I think I might be able to do one-ring MU's...

Clapping muscleups? That's probably not gonna happen...

I don't even need my feet. I just flex my pecs and it sends a shock wave that propels me away from the ground. You can call me Master if you want...

Another challenge I would like to add is an inverted hanging pull up. Ive seen the barbarians do it on some clip, but I am completely lost. I don't even know what muscles to use...

Uhm, what do you mean?  German Hang pullups?  Or hanging upside down?

You can train that by pulling into back lever and stopping  at the peak then doing negatives.

I think he's talking about the maneuver where you pull through a front lever and bring your entire body over the bar from the inverted position. I heard that not even Steve could do it.

I'll see if I can find the thread, but you posted a diagram of an exercise and said you couldn't even do it even though you could do a MU with over 50% of your BW.

That would be a Front Lever pulll followed by an Elevator.

That's an single armed elbow lever.  Much easier than a Planche.  Still difficult though.

Yes! The movement alludes me...

I'm all for decreased leverage training, but that does look a bit awkward on the shoulders/elbows...

I'd probably avoid it for the same reason I don't like upright rows or behind the neck pullups. Potential for injury is likely much higher than other movements that are probably similarly effective.
