Shoe Review: Feiyues
« on: July 14, 2009, 12:15:42 PM »
FIT:
These shoes feel great.  Ive been wearing these on a daily basis. I have pretty wide feet and these dont pinch on the sides like most other shoes ive worn. Feiyue is a Chinese shoe company, so the sizing is kind of strange, but its not hard to find a conversion chart. I wear about a size ten, and i got a size 44 and they fit me perfectly. If you get a size wrong im pretty sure you can send them back for a new pair free of charge, i havent done this myself so im not completely sure. As long as you get the size right, they feel great, you'll forget theyre there.
5/5

FLEXIBILITY:
The most flexible shoes ive ever worn. Curl your toes and the shoe will bend with your foot. The top is canvas, which really doesnt restrict movement either.
5/5

WEIGHT:
Not extremely light weight shoes, the sole is just a thick peice of rubber, so its kind of heavy, a little more than the average running shoe, but nothing to worry about, i dont think that it really makes a big difference. (edit: actually these are quite light, i didnt have much to compare them to, sorry about that.
4/5

GRIP:
Very grippy, great for precisions. They stick to walls very well, and still retain a decent amount of grip when wet, i wouldnt count on it though. The sole is all one peice, and doesnt have any fancy tread, so theres a lot of surface contact.
5/5

BREATHABILITY:
These shoes are thin and breath great, no worries here. They do smell like rubber though.
5/5

CUSHIONING:
Almost non-existant. A bit better than barefoot, theres at least a decent amount of shock absorbtion . Feiyues are worn for that “barefoot feel”, so you really arent looking for a lot of cushioning anyway. Great for learning good technique.
1/5

Durability
If you wore these daily and did nothing but walk, im sure theyd last quite a while, but parkour training definately takes its toll. I havent done too much training, but the toes are already starting to wear down after a few days of parkour. If you want them to survive, then make sure you dont slide your feet on walls, that seems to be one of the biggest killers. The sole of quite thick though, and the shoes dont lose any grip as they wear. This is my first pair, so i cant tell you exactly how long you should expect them to last.
3/5

Price
About 15 dollars. With shipping, I’d expect to pay about 22 bucks, not bad at all. The best shoes you can get for this price.
5/5

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The sides of the shoe are rounded, and theres absolutely no ankle support at all, the shoes themselves are very low cut on your foot, its pretty much like being barefoot with a little bit of protection. Make sure that you are careful, these shoes arent forgiving. Feiyues force you to have good technique where you might slack with other shoes. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad thing. Id get the black ones, the white end up looking brown after a while.

The Bottom Line:
Great shoes for the price, great shoes regardless. I’d drop a little money for a pair, they are definitely worth trying out. Barefoot running is great for your feet, and Feiyues are pretty darn close. You could buy more than a few pairs of these for the price of supposedly superior shoes.

Pros:  CHEAP, great for learning, or for making sure that you have good technique, Very comfortable.
Cons: Some say theyre strange looking shoes, I don’t care, and actually like the way they look. Kind of a converse/puma fusion you could say. No protection, I wouldn’t make any huge jumps with these things if you arent absolutely sure that your technique is perfect.

Hope this helps :D

I agree with most of what you said, but they certainly aren't heavier than most running shoes. Maybe you've been wearing different running shoes than the ones I've had, but my Feiyues are substantially lighter than my running shoes.

I got a pair of these-- they are very lightweight and look great.  They attract a lot of attention; I have had several people stop me in the street to ask where they could get a pair.  For the price, they're a good deal.

Now the bad news: if you do not have perfect form, these shoes will hurt you.  They have virtually no padding at all.  So if you land hard, you will absorb all of the impact.  For a purist, this probably sounds great.  But for a beginner, these shoes could end your parkour career before you get off the ground.

Still the coolest looking shoes I've got.  Maybe when I'm a super-duper landing guy these will be my favorite parkour shoes.

I've been wearing mine for a few months now, and I love them. They get better as they age (The sole wears flat, the grip improves, the flexbility even improves, believe it or not.) At first, they hurt my feet, but now I feel my technique at least on landing has improved greatly.

Considering how cheap they are, its a worthwile investment. Buy 2 pairs, save on shipping,.
Life is what you make of it.

is the sole of the shoe a lot like converse, except for the grip? And should i get the hi tops for extra ankle support or does it make no difference?

You don't need ankle support. And the shoe is nothing like converse. The sole is rounded, not flat.

About the ankle support, support is bad. It weakens your foot. Better to let your muscles handle it and your feet and ankles will be much stronger.

my #1 shoe for the last 5 years.  i love the way they fit and feel after they are broken in, but the grip after about a month is pretty bad (i like that though)
i have gone through 4 pair

Expect after about a month of hard training to have very little grip. You can still wear them for quite some time after that though, id wear my worn out ones(sooooo comfortable) when im not training to get the most out of them and the newer ones when I need grip, it makes wearing them a lot less wasteful. And yeah, train everything in them, theyll wear just like any other shoe, just a bit quicker. Luckily, theyre 14 bucks though :)

Thanks much! I just ordered a pair and will report in when I get them! I kinda thought about making a weekly updating post that discusses the wear of them, since I heard that 2-4 months is their average life span.
