Warmup - Pullups Substitute?
« on: July 08, 2009, 02:04:46 PM »
Hey there!

Is there a different body weight exercise that works the same muscles as a pull up? I don't have easy access to a place I can practice them... especially just as a basic warm up.

Thanks. :3

Effective tool for alternative workouts in my opinion is a resistance band. They can be used and modified to perform almost every exercise that is praised for Parkour. Pull Downs instead of pull ups to get you started there. Check em out, easy to take along anywhere and very inexpensive.

If possible, I'd like something that requires NO tools. Thanks, and sorry, haha.

You can always use a chair to assist your pull ups til you're strong and confident enough in your ability to take it away. Tools are here to help...even if you can't afford or find a chair...find something similar to help you and you'll be well on your way towards your goal.

I never said I can't do pull ups... I just don't have anywhere to do them. I need a workout that focuses on the same muscle groups that I can just do in my room without any tools or anything.

I cant think of one that works the EXACT same muscles, especially without tools. So just go do some handstand push ups do like 60 that should equal about 1 pull up. :-Sarcasm Well Pullups mainly work your back so do back exercises/bicept excersises, and maybe wall climbs.

Make a mistake or two, you'll live, and live better because of it.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahahaha you got me Xavier.

Nathan, do them on a tree, a swing set bar, a stairwell, a really tall guys arms, the molding above a doorway, pretty much any outdoor playpark.  Use your imagination.  ^^

Iron gym is just 30 bucks... but I've see pull up bars that go as low as 20 bucks.

I never heard of it either, but a google search gave me this:

When you hang from a ledge or pipe and then bring your body up and down I think. Isn't a pulldown another name for a pull up?

No, pulldowns are on a machine in the gym where you sit down and pull the bar down to you.

Don't use them. Do pullups or pullups on ledges (like you're referring to).
