Yamakasi on Ripley's
« on: July 08, 2006, 10:45:56 AM »
I was just sitting down and watching the tube, when Ripley's Believe It or Not came on. Weirdly enough, Yamakasi came on. I was kind of intruigued, since they were basically doing parkour, except a little more flashy. What really kind of made me mad though is that I think some of them claimed they started their art. I read somehwhere else that some of them might have trained with Belle, but I'm not sure. Anyways, just thought I'd inform people of a sort of media appearance since a lot of people watch Ripley's.

Also, kind of funny because the announcer said that some of the stuff they were doing was so insane that they couldn't show it on TV. So you really didn't get to see too many of their moves.

What yamakasi does is l' art du desplacement. Also when was it on.

The Yamakasi is the first krew ever dood.  David Belle and Seb were both in it from what I understand.

no, the yamakasi does their own art which they call yamakasi. it does not include the efficiency of movement aspect of parkour, which is why they do flashy stuff. and yes, they are the founders of their own art.

Hmm if i remember correctly. From the translated version of Generation Yamakasi, they say they practice L'art Du Deplacment. I always just thought yamakasi was the name of the crew. Could someone please clarify my confusion here?

I can't imagine yamakasi being "to insane for T.V." I can imagine they were just trying to play them up.

Actually, It wouldn't be the first time I heard of something like that being withheld from the air because it was "too dangerous"

Demon, didn't you say that 9 News couldn't air a gap jump of yours because it was "too dangerous" ?

i dont think it is an issue of "can't". i think it is more of an issue of "don't want to".

Yeah that's where I heard they did l' art du desplacement, on Generation Yamakasi. I'm not saying I'm right that's just what I knew.

Scroll down a few posts and read what jin said. Apparently they told him they practice yamakasi.

Umm, it came on the night of the eight, the night I posted it. I think I watched it maybe two hours before I posted.

Also, I was reading further in that link and CPK says:

"Its not from Japanese though.

The term "Yamakasi" hails from Zaire, in the Lingala language."  I hope that gives some insight to the meaning. As for what it actually is, no clue. Apparantly it is just another version of parkour, but far more showy and more "tricks". Hope I could enlighten someone.

I dind't think there was really much to see. I mean, for the most part, it was basic parkour. There was one clip where on of them made a vault to a kind of kat then he did a sort of 360 pop-vault that was kind cool, I know I couldn't have done it. I really wish they would have shown the footage that was "too extreme for tv".

I think I'm going to do more research on the Yamakasi. Does anyone know if they have a website or if there is a specific website explaining their motives or philosphies?

If you haven't seen it, check this documentary out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMQ4q2ODNIk&search=yamakasi

Plenty of stuff that's "too crazy for TV".  Especially some of the 5 story roof gaps they were doing at the end.  Made me balls tingle just watching.

There is no difference between Yamakasi and Art Du Deplacement. Also, if you want to find out more about the Yamakasi, they have a skyblog. Look it up. It's in French though, so you might have to bust out Bablefish.
