I'm a Girl with a Question
« on: July 04, 2009, 08:05:07 PM »
Hey everyone out there:
I'm a female traceuse getting started with parkour and I had a question about palm spins.
I have watched a few tutorials on Youtube (thank you very much to Ozzi and the Urban Current guys), but it's not enough just to watch a two minute video on the internet and suddenly be able to go out and do a perfect palm spin. I tried a few against a wall and just couldn't get it down.
Any hints/suggestions/tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated--
Thanks!!!

If your just getting started, id suggest not starting with a palm spin. Start with the basics
Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

To answer your question, try starting out on a corner, such as a picnic table, or even just something as simple as the end of a wall so that you don't have to actually do a whole palm spin, but so that you can build up to it by doing smaller bits of the palm spin. Once you get proficient on a corner of a table or whatever you choose to use, and you feel like you are able to rotate round enough, you can try it again on a normal wall or what have you.

The key is just being able to hold yourself up high enough above the wall and rotate around the pivot point, your arms.

this is the tutorial that I used... It gave me a good setup technique to use while learning...  Basically, take it in steps... slowly jump over the obstacle more and more each time until you can do it in 1 jump

put your dominant hand on the vertical surface with your fingers pointing downward at the ground. push down and see that you have at least some resistance that will help you hold yourself up. next, get your non-dominant hand and put it above your dominant hand, with your fingers pointing sideways. jump with your legs, up and in the direction you want to spin, use your hand with fingers facing down to pivot, hold yourself up, and spin on, while you use your hand above to spin yourself. i was taught to "spin the pizza". the wall is your pizza, being held by your pivot hand, and try to spin it like a pizza with your other hand, and what you are really doing is spinning your own body as you do this.

easy ways to practice. go a rail or ledge about waste high. and do that railspin where you jump and spin your body 180 degrees but land on the same side you started on. start on the end or corner so you dont clip your feet if you didnt spin or jump good enough. that is a good prerequisite. a way to practice the actual palm spin, go to a park with those big red picnic tables. rest it against a tree at a 45 degree angle. and start palm spinning there. once you get good, move it up to a high angle. the lower angle makes it easier to hold yourself up. as you get better, you can increase the angle by pushing the part of the picnic table on the ground closer to the tree, thus increasing the angle and difficulty. eventually you will be almost completely vertical. trying it on a completely vertical brick wall will just be a minimal difference from that point

good luck

thats your problem right there, your missing the dedication and practice part. i can tell you how to write the letter A, that doesnt mean we will have the same exact technique for drawing that design....

OP...i don't think you need to worry about palmspins if you just started,,,work on landings, rolls, and take offs...from there take it slow and work up to doing the slightly harder techniques

Here's how I got the basics down in a few tries: I found a picnic table, and placed one hand on the bench, and the other on the table edge, effectively giving me a 45 degree surface to spin over (for this movement, a 45 degree angle makes it as easy as possible). Then I started by making sure the correct foot was leading and the correct foot was landing. This was easy, because I could step one foot up onto the table top and then continue downward and land. This could be done very slowely. I did it a little faster and after about 3 tries, I was able to spin without landing my foot on the table. I still can't do a palm spin on a vertical wall, because I don't train flips, but you should probably learn how to lead and land with your feet before going vertical. Make sure you can do it fast, too. Like I said, 45 degrees is the easiest possible angle to do that trick, so don't assume that a bare minimum success means you can advance to vertical - you should be able to do it clean, and quick at 45 degrees without any chance of messing up, because it's much easier than the real thing.

Find a picnic table, it might make your basic training a million times easier.
