Hey guys! I've run this by Ryan and Matt and they were cool with it so now it's time to start planning with the rest of you.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the television show "Ace of Cakes" or the Charm City Cakes bakery in Baltimore. But basically these people make cakes that are fantastic works of art. A simple google search will tell you how amazing these people are. Of course they are also absurdly expensive and we could never afford them.

Recently, however, I met someone who is a similarly talented culinary artist. She has quite enthusiastically offered to do a Cat Fountain cake for us. This won't be for free of course especially since we're expecting around 150 people this year for the jam it will be pretty costly. But, since she mostly wants to do it so she can have something impressive to add to her portfolio, we will be able to get this at a huge discount. We'll probably just have to pay for materials.

Now I'd love to see (and eat) a huge cake replica of cat fountain but I can't pay for this alone so I want to see who would be willing to chip in an extra ten or so dollars in addition to the usual money for food at the jam so we can have this cake.

After that I suppose we should start thinking about what flavors people want.

How much are we looking at, cost wise, for this cake? I'd definitely be willing to help out with this, I think it would be pretty cool to eat cat fountain.

I suppose that depends. I'm hoping it won't come to more than a few dollars per person. Our baker hasn't seen the fountain yet but I'll post a cost estimate when she gives me one.

My sister is also a decorative culinary dessert chef in NYC and she can likely bake one for us too. I just called her and she may be willing to fly out here to make the cake for us. I am sending her pics of the fountain and going to let her know it needs to feed 150+ people.

I will get a price from her tonight after she looks over some pics of the fountain then we can see where this can go with both of our bakers...

But that there... is awesome.
So, who wants to help me make a MEAT replica of cat fountain? I figure... a little yellow and red foodcoloring in the mashed potatoes and it could look like the stone color...

That... might actually not be too hard. Make the mold, make the crap, pour the crap in, bake... somehow, wait, remove mold, spray on some sort of food adhesive coating..., then coloring.

These cakes aren't made with a mold...they are built like a structure....so you would need to be creative with ingredients...I will ask her about that when I speak with her again tonight

My sister would charge $750 for a cake that can feed 150 people ($5/person...a HUGE discount from her normal prices...about half off)

I don't know how we would go about collecting money but she wouldn't come out here and make a cake like that without the money up front. The ingredients alone can cost a couple hundred.

Well... we need to get an estimate of how many people would be willing toss in some money for the cake. The only Idea I have is to create a Facebook Event for the National jam and poll the people there...

If you think its a worthwhile Idea, I'll go ahead and set it up....

Did you hear from your chef yet? I am not sure if my sister can do it because of the distance -- we can definitely get the cost to be less than $150 if we dont try to feed 150 people with it.
