How to Flow?
« on: June 07, 2009, 12:50:54 PM »
How do you combine movements so they look smooth together?

How do you flow over objects, how do you obtain that move combo, but have good transitions?

I don't really like the word flow because people focus on getting "flow" instead of have fun, but if you want to move smoothly learn one footed takeoffs on kong and flips and such http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jX53jKgDxLQ

It's not really something you consciously do...  If you TRY to flow, it will looked hesitant because you are going to be thinking...

The Flow is almost an acquired thing...  You get an arsenal of moves and just know the entrance and exit of each... after some practice of each individual move, you will natural start to link them together in a way that makes sense to your body, Subconsciously... You won't even know that you're doing it until a friend points it out...

(Well, that is how I experienced it, everyone else experiences PK/FR differently so it may be entirely wrong for you lol, who knows...)

You just made me notice I linked a saddle vault, then two subsequent reverse vaults... flowing.

Once I learn how to roll...

you cant flow without a strong adaptation ability. when you can come up with what move to do where in an instant just because your body is balanced a certain way and moving at a certain speed, then you can flow.

it will come with training.

my mind is constantly moving, one day my body will be strong enough to keep up.

Condition frequently, train proper landings, and move lightly on your feet. Start with small movements slowly trying to preserve speed and energy, increase speed and eventually in your training increase the size of your movements. Training plyometrics more directly and intensely can be a big boon to your 'flow' but try not to train it heavily more than a couple times a week, and make sure to have a sufficient strength foundation before putting your body under that kind of stress.

I strongly agree with Kyle. Landing on one foot(split foot landing) is how you make movements smooth. But its very important to make sure you can complete every vault with control and power. Make it a process: do each vault with a pause inbetween each movement, then progress to eliminate tha pause, then do it 100 times over. You wont get it the 10th or 20th time, maybe not the 100th time; but train to never get it wrong. Train with people in your area than know how to teach parkour. Use your community to your advantage.  Thats why we exsist.

How, ^ that is very complete.

I think of flow like achieving something special, as in video games, art, sports, ideas ect; naturally.
Example,
If someone asks me: "How did you do that?"; I would not really know how I did the thing;
I just know I got from point A to B, or pulled something from some "instinctive" ability.

Anyway that's my thoughts, enjoy

Might I suggest simple repetition? Remeber the first day your rode your bike? Now think about how much better your are...

Parkour is kinda like that. Experience is quite simply your most powerful tool.
