Psuedo Pushups
« on: May 21, 2009, 04:16:55 PM »
I am currently doing psuedo pushups to try to work toward full planche pushups. I currently can do around 5-7 psuedo pushups per set with good form. Any other exercises I can do to help besides planche progression?

I've noticed wieghted dips seem to be speeding up my planche progression. They have a lot of carryover for climb ups/muscle ups too.

Wall-assisted or free-standing handstand pushups. Elbow lever. Basic breakdancing freezes.

Pure bent arm work doesn't help.

-------------

Straight arm press handstands, the isometrics, the planche pushup variations

Alright. Thanks. I'll try some dips. Don't have any weights though.

Lean forward as much as you can and maintain that body angle.

If you do it well enough you should only be able ot 3-5 reps max.

Which is why I suggested HSPUs...?
That said, bent arm work does help. The various freezes I've learned in breakdancing got me to use my shoulders, core, and various stabilizers in ways I'd never imagined. When you combine that with things like HSPUs, it sure does help a lot with planche work. I can do the advanced tuck planche now with relative ease, which I could not do 3 weeks ago, and I haven't attempted a single planche in that period.

Of course, you want to focus more on strength than stability for the planche, but that doesn't make the latter useless.

The point is this:

It develops strength/muscle, very slowly compared.

Straight arm work develops movement pattern, and strength/muscle for the position.

There's no doubt which is better. If you're practicing bent arm planches, you're in for a surprise when you try to progress beyond adv. tuck.

Point taken. I just like to avoid absolutes.

And I never practice bent arm planches.
