How Parkour Works
« on: June 22, 2006, 05:39:39 PM »
So I was reading about invisibility cloaks on HowStuffWorks.com (one of the most useful websites I've ever seen), and I was shocked to see this ad on the left side of the screen:

More recognition every day.  Here's a link to the page: How Parkour Works.

Upon actually reading this article, I was amazed by the accuracy of their portrayal of Parkour-- they even note commonly debated topics.  My astonishment was doubled when I saw that the most of the facts came directly from Urban Freeflow.  My only issue is that American Parkour is listed as "Parkour America" on the Links page.  Boo hoo.

That actually is a pretty good article.  It's amusingly very neutral and objective, merely presenting the sides.  I'm very impressed.

"To date, official parkour competitions don't exist. If purists have their way, they never will"
Those purist bastards...

Wait i wonder who helped the write this peice?
"Urban Freeflow is at the center of the global parkour community, always aiming to give back to the discipline and help those pursuing it. Through online message boards, an ample library of Web articles, photos and videos, Urban Freeflow works to provide much needed education to those practicing parkour"
i still have no idea...  ???

"Whether purists like it or not, parkour is in the media and people everywhere are trying it. These people need to be educated...'
And i wonder who can educate them?
"...Urban Freeflow runs two academies for parkour training"
ohh... how convientient :P

Im just bitching, this article does have some good points though, espically compared to laot of other articles

"Unfortunately, because parkour had not been organized yet, these new traceurs (mostly teenage boys) had no proper instruction and a complete lack of context. Belle and his associates had attained their level of skill through strictly regimented training over the course of more than a decade. What followed were injuries and, in the case of two unfortunate boys in France, death."

And this is pretty good too
"However, most traceurs reject the comparison, finding comparisons to the negative public image of skateboarding (that of rebellious and misguided youth) inaccurate and unfair."

All in all, i say its pretty good, plus it gives a reference to NM, which is pretty nifty.

It should be no surprise about the UFF stuff considering they worked with UFF to complete this thing. It was advertised on UFF news a while ago and is listed in the media they've worked with.

how do invisibility cloaks work? that being said, i like the the british gentleman is wearing a suit, it appears as if he might be jumping into a cat...IN A SUIT JACKET?!

"individual expression through acrobatic moves" i've seen enough threads to know not to start this but...parkour isnt about "individual expression", is it?

Parkour is not about individual expression, pointman, that's more freerunning. Parkour, on it's most basic level, is about getting from point A to point B. In such situations self expression would differ your focus and slow you down.
Nothing wrong with self expression, but that's more of what freerunning is (as I've said). But when training in le Parkour, express yourself if you want, just keep the mentality of the purpose of Parkour in mind.
