Most difficult obstacle?
« on: May 10, 2009, 01:06:38 PM »
I was just wondering what everyone’s most challenging obstacle would be.  I am just starting to learn parkour, so I’m not very good.  That being said, I think my most difficult obstacles so far are chain link fences.  I have found no efficient way to get over them; they are clumsy to climb, and the points at the top make them tough to vault.  Anyway, what are some difficult obstacles you experienced traceurs have encountered, and how did you overcome them?

I believe there are some threads on getting over chain link fences hanging around the forums, you'll be able to find them in a quick search. :)

At the moment I can't think of any tough obstacles, but I definately agree with you on chain link fences! All I could think of is either a pop vault, or just clearing the fence all together.

Walls of any height, that also connect to a ceiling.

covered with barbed wire.
You shouldn't try to do multiple experiments to calculate linear vertical acceleration over large distances.

Spike pits.

As for the chainlink fences, I think your answer is called a gate vault.  Here's a tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpbE3QUPWP8
It's not a very good tutorial, but you'll get the idea.  For a chainlink fence, instead of grabbing onto the rails, you'll just grab the top rail and the actual chainlink.  Make sure your beltline is above the top of the fence so you don't get caught, and only do it on chainlink fences where the wires are bent down at the top.

Mental Fear, easily the most challenging obstacle for me. If I can't do something physicly I walk away feeling satisfied because I tried as hard as I could. If I can't do something mentally and I watch other people get close and I know I can do it but when your standing on the wall and you just can't jump, I walk away feeling much worse.

Mental Fear
I'm surprised that wasn't the first thing said... for those of us with that overbearing sense of cautiousness, this is by far the biggest obstacle we'll ever encounter.

Both mental fear and cars. I've only gone over three cars in my life because I'm always worried about messing up on them and hurting the vehicle.

Conditioning is my obstacle.

While I'm actually practicing, I'm having fun.

However, conditioning, that's just torturing my body for a set period of time. It's hard for me to get motivated to do that.

I have to put my hand in for the fear vote as well. So much of the stuff I know I can do physically, but it's the mentality that I struggle with. I try to visualize myself doing a monkey stand onto a picnic table say, and all I can visualize are my feet clipping the bench and the many places my face will probably land. However, when I actually do it, I could. It's just a matter of jumping that first time. Mind you, I have smashed my knees multiple times, but the only actual wipe out was when I was doing a jump to a bar that was diagonal and the side of my knee went full speed into a metal pole on the side. Ironically, that's not what I kept visualizing as the wipeout potential. But yes, fear is by far the biggest one for me.

chain link fence there not stable at all and on the note of mental fear is all about turning your fear into persistence i have no gyms around me or mats so everything i try for the first time(flips vaults gaps) can be painful is not landed correctly, i have learn the hard way with most things i try nice scares to so though  :D , if you can use your fear to work for you and heighten your precision instead of lessening it you will be much better off.

anything that's not the ideal parkour obstacle (walls, rails, cement walls, etc). Being placed in a random place and overcoming obstacles is to me, pretty different. You really have to trust your skills at these times.

Fear of Kong-Toe-Clipping or when I roll, accidentally smacking my head on concrete

Oh..my..god! That is SO annoying, haha.

I hate when you just get over the mental block of something, and then you go to do it and have perfect form but clip your knee or shin, and end up limping around for a little bit until the pain goes away. It's terrible. :P
