Our Own Slice Of Heaven
« on: May 06, 2009, 10:58:33 PM »
Ok guys...finally an update. I don't know if you guys remember when I posted an email I sent to the Assistant Director of St. Louis County Parks but here is an outline of what he told me.

*they cannot let us keep doing any street gymnastics or parkour in the current county parks due to the safety of the other patrons of the parks

*they would like us to draft a proposal for a plot of land within one of the existing county parks to be a specific street gymnastics/parkour park, with grounds, equipment and obstacles as needed. as with other special interest groups they have worked with in the past, we are responsible for getting the funding (through fundraisers, sponsorships etc...) to build this special area.

*the proposal needs to include location (several if possible, since they will have to determine if the location is ok within the park) of which he suggested perhaps the old non-used pool at queeny and the grassy area next to it as one possibility since right now the pool is just sitting empty and the field isn't designate for anything. (i think that would be ace, fill the bottom of part of it with pea gravel and voila, nice flipping area!!!!)

*the proposal also needs to include what equipment/obstacles and the costs for building them and not just guesses...this needs to be estimates gotten from local stores/companies (i would imagine a mapped out drawing of the area would be best, corresponding to a key with materials needed, and cost for materials and construction)

*the proposal also needs to include how it will be funded (fundraisers, sponsorships, nice rich relatives hahahaha)

*the proposal should include some sort of time frame as well

Whereas this isn't the news I was hoping for, it is very positive.

Soooooooo.....thats where it is at. He really sounds like he wants to work with us on this and I feel that if we can present a reasonable proposal that the parks dept will accept it.

One thought I had was if we were able to do a lot of the actual building of stuff ourselves, the costs would be SO much reduced since we'd only be paying for materials.

Please give obstacle suggestions (keep it very low budget please) and give any typed proposal ideas you might have. I have a rough draft typed up but it does not include any specifics such as prices and others

FINALLY:
If this park does open there will be a HUGE Grand Opening Jam. Although it may not be big it WILL be free. So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come, donate, and enjoy the company.

If you would like to donate PRIOR to the visit (to aid in initial construction) feel free to go to www.stlpk.webs.com and hit the donate button on the right. This is a dedicated paypal for the construction of this area. PLEASE DONATE! We CANT do it without you!

Wish us luck on "Our Own Slice Of Heaven"

This is awesome!  I'm not in a position to donate anything right now, but I'll definitely be able to give something around June or so.  Maybe in the mean time you guys could start getting an estimate together, so we have a goal to shoot for?

Also, this was up on the APK main page a few days ago, and I think it would make a great resource for you:

APK Article on Texas Parkour Park

The actual website for the park

I'm excited for you guys!

P.S. if you go to the stlpk page you can now see pics of the area we are working with as well as some ideas in the captions. When the area is designated as ours we will most likely open it immediately and do construction from time to time on the area. The sooner it opens, the sooner people will be willing to donate because they will know exactly what they are donating to!

Small update

as of right now if we get the area it will be open nearly immeditately (about a week to clean and make minor adjustments)

we would have a kiddy pool filled with pea gravel for flips

a large pool with a 13 foot deep end to learn wall climbs and spins (as well as wall flips and others, but there will be no padding here right away)

The chain link will be removed in some select places on the fencing for vault practice

there would be no money spent at first most likely except for the pea gravel (no calculations yet...)

Proposed Rules For The Area (Maybe a sign down the line)
1. No one under 13
2. Use at your own risk
3. Meant for Parkour and related exercises
4. Closes 1/2 hour after sunset

This area should be great...

I talked to Tom (Assisstant Director of St. Louis County Parks) and he is having a meeting with the Senior Board of Directors on Wednesday and wants a little bit more detailed proposal written up outlining how we will keep the area safe and keep it funded as well as what changes need to be made.

um dude i have brothers that are semi interested in parkour so can u lower the age limit to ten?
and get some lights so it could be open later also "use at own risk" could be problematic so just have liability forms like
(NAME OF PARK HERE)PARKOUR PARK RETAINS NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR INJURYS AND DAMAGED EQUIPMENT THAT SHOULD BE GOOD JUST ADD A BIT more if you can find a skate board park and ask them about there rules and regulations .but yeah thank you for doing this as soon as you can get the park running (no pun intended) i can start training

here's the issue with your requests.
the playground that is nearby is limited to 12 and under. SO people under 12 can train there while people over 12 can train in our area. I can't lower it for 1 or 2 people because this opens it up to EVERYONE that age and we don't need kids being in there climbing all over everything. It's not intended for that necessarily.

Unless you want to help pay the bills there will be no lighting. Plus Queeny closes a half hour after sunset so people cant get in anyway

"use at your own risk" removes all liability from that area. In fact a nearby skate park in Jefferson Barracks is use at your own risk.

there is not "entry" to the park with normal employees so liability forms would not do anything.

This is inside of another park and our rules have to follow theirs. I don't have much control over that. Safety is there biggest concern so all of this is for that purpose. Even the age limit is to keep everyone safe. The nearby playground is honestly better than our park so your brothers and anyone 12 and under will be very content with that area.

they haven't let me in to measure and I don't think I could even make an educated guess... it's got a HUGE pool and a large kiddy pool as well as a large eating area with benches and a handicap ramp that weaves back and forth which is GREAT for flow work.. if you honestly go to this site:

http://www.freewebs.com/stlpk/queenyparkplanning.htm

you can look at the pics of it there. It's amazinnnngggg

:o :o :o :o :o :o i just looked at the pics and man it looks awesome but i think the pool could be used for much more then a wall climb maybe you could have half steps up to the top of the deep end like with gaps in between so you could percision in or out also keep the benches kong vaults and dash vaults are some of the things i need to practice on

we are trying to keep 3 of the benches. not the metal ones though they are too slick to try anything on.

elaborate about the precision thing I don't quite understand..

like so http://www.hamptonhillps.org.uk/exhibition/2006/steps.jpg all the way up to the top with bigger spaces and no grass in between i am not sure if that could be used for precisions but it could be used for a lot of things

so... like columns coming out from the bottom of the pool??

so they could go accross the middle area or something so we can leave the deep end open... that would be after funding started.
