just a quick question
« on: May 16, 2009, 07:10:02 PM »
i know running barefoot can be good, but i cant do that, because my streets always seem to have broken glass on em.

my question, though, is would training vaults be a good thing to do barefoot? and why?

Well, get some Vibram five fingers if you want to do that
And yes that's good for training vaults
Lets you learn proper landing.
Land incorrectly too many times and you're going to be in a world of hurt on your feet.
Tomorrow could be the best day of your life.

Vaults are great, everything is great barefoot. :P

If you have any woods paths or rural environments near you, try going for a run in those they're great for conditioning bare feet.

You bet.  Running barefoot will teach you a more proper running technique and if you train vaults, it will teach you a more proper take off and landing technique.  If it hurts your feet barefoot, just imagine what it's doing to your other joints with shoes on.

If you have the money, you could buy some vibrams or you could find a place that doesn't have broken glass like a park or wooded area.  Another benefit of running barefoot on uneven surfaces is it will force you to make small adjustments which in turn will help strengthen your ankles.

Just be careful when first starting out, your feet and muscles are probably not conditioned enough to take on a mile right off the bat.  It's something you gotta work up to.

quick and related question, are there any benefits to shoes? I don't do stuff bare feet because I prefer the comfort and protection of shoes...  I KNOW that they are heavy and it is GREAT to PK bare feet but I just don't like the thought of broken toes or cut open feet...

You already said it. Comfort and protection. That's just about it.

Yeah.. you kinda answered your own question there  :)

I train barefoot on occasion, but usually go with shoes, because with shoes with the comfort and protection, I can challenge myself more than I could barefoot.  Just my thoughts though.... I'm sure there are a bunch of people who prefer barefoot, but I think they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

1: I don't think there are any parasites that go through the feet. Fungi, yes, and things like athlete's foot, but parasites? Not that I know of.

2: 'Tetanus' is how you spell it.

I love barefeet. Yeah, it's basically a person preference. There's both pro's and con's to both. I prefer barefeet, but that's just me. I like the natural feeling it brings. But, do as you wish, whatever, keeps you in this great lifestyle we call parkour :].

Hookworm.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Infection of the host is by the larvae, not the eggs. While A. duodenale can be ingested, the usual method of infection is through the skin; this is commonly caused by walking barefoot through areas contaminated with fecal matter. The larvae are able to penetrate the skin of the foot, and once inside the body, they migrate through the vascular system to the lungs, and from there up the trachea, and are swallowed. They then pass down the esophagus and enter the digestive system, finishing their journey in the intestine, where the larvae mature into adult worms.
