Where to parkour
« on: April 28, 2009, 11:08:17 AM »
Hey I reacently started parkour, I live in Wisconsin near milwaukee.  My area mostly consists of residential areas and a few stores/buisnesses.  i feel kinda awkward running through peoples backyards, and when i was at a school a janitor called the cops on me for being on the roof (there is no no tresspassing sign).  So i was wondering if there is anyone in the area or state who knows a good spot/area to go to, or if anyone has any ideas.

Well I don't live in you're area, but I can tell you this, getting on the roof of any building is traspassing even if there are no signs. How about you find a place that is public to practice, obviosly not your school.

One more thing don't use parkour as a verb. ;D

If you don't even know how to use the word parkour you should definitely not be on roofs anyway.
If I can't speed vault it I can monkey vault it.
If I can't monkey vault it I can kong it.
If I can't kong it I can kash it.
If I can't kash it I can climb it.
If I can't climb it there's another way around it.

hey im also in wisconsin, i live in kenosha.. i have the same problem. i make do with the things i can find, and try to practice Parkour as much as possible (try not to use it as a verb :P) oh and rooftops, not a good idea 1.its illegal 2.i can tell your not very proficient in Parkour yet (neither am i though, dont worry)
it seems like you have the wrong impression of parkour though, its not about going through peoples backyards and going on rooftops, its more about moving through you environment in a more efficient way. like ohter than walking around something, you go over it. if you ever come down to kenosha, tell me and ill show you some of the spots taht ive found..theres also a gym that you can go to on fridays from 7-8:30 for $10...it helps a lot and i can show you what i know.

The misconception of using Parkour as a verb is common so dont take it personally. Anyways just use the backyards like u have been also. You'll be gone before someone can ask you what your doing so dont feel awkward. :P

well, seeing as people have already owned you on the "verbification" of the word parkour
ill tell you why they did and how to use it, seeing as most skipped that part

the word parkour is a noun. it is an art form, not the practice of one.
the common way of putting this into your head is: you wouldnt say "im going to soccer" youd say "im going to play soccer"

for some weird reason, it is ingrained into all traceurs heads early on that they should NEVER use it as a verb, and that they hsould be thoroughly annoyed when they hear it used as one. i really dont understand WHY it pisses me off, but, its oh-so-damn irritating!!!
lol

just refrain from EVER using the word parkour as a verb, or to describe someone, i.e. parkourist, parkourer.

even though parkour isn't about doing crazy stunts and jumping from roof  to roof
an experienced traceur can do it whenever neccesary , like running from a mob of people or gang

like you said its moving through your enviroment is a efficient way.
but i dont recomend going on roofs,  it is illegal ( counts as tresspasing)

everyone seems to be against going on roofs, but in nearly every Parkour Video, a roof was involved in one way or antoher?!

it isnt parkour to be on a roof, unless you NEED t ojump from roof to roof to get where you wanna be the quickest way possible, there is really no reason to train it, unless you think that one time youll be in your office and an assassin will come and try to kill you, and the only way out is jumping off the roof where the building next to it is so conveniently one story lower :/

i think its pretty pointless (obviously)

AHHHHHHH! PARKOUR HAS BEEN VERBED! lol
Anyway, find anywhere with railings, walls, fences, playgrounds, or improvise and build some training equipment in your backyard. I live in Toms River NJ and there is almost NOWHERE to train.

I think it's funny that in correcting him, about half of us used another noun in verb form.  Haha  :-Sarcasm

But anyways, if you are just starting into parkour, you don't even really need very many things from your environment to start off.  You can drill rolls and landings on a patch of grass and then move on to pavement/concrete.  And you can practice ground precisions by spotting things on the ground and jumping between them (i.e. cracks in the sidewalk or lines on flooring).  Until you drill the basics and really start to delve into the art, you shouldn't require too much from your surroundings, but going to a neighborhood park always helps too, those are usually really great places to start out and get the basic movements down.  Hope this helps!! Good luck and train safe!

If your talking about professionals such as yamakasi, David belle, Sebastien foucan, 3 run etc thats because they attained the appropriate permission in order to do so. Otherwise your probably looking at videos that claim to be parkour but in all actuality they're just stunt reels.

In my opinion roof are rather pointless seeing as you have to waste useful energy to get up there in the first place and then waste more energy getting back down for about a two second jump which isn't as necessary as drilling the basics on ground level.

it's just going to complicate things...like jail and court

like i said     Whats life without a little risk?

Well bro were not skaters so we want to drift away from that mentality of breaking laws even if they're small ones. Striving to give pk a good name isn't an easy task and one little slip up can literally affect the surrounding communities as well as your inner community. So be sure to train safely and completely respectively that'll make things all the more easier trust me.

God bless

im not saying  we should break laws

i was just making a point ,that if i was  running for my life
i'd jump  some rooftops to get the hell out.

im all for giving parkour a good name
but using it to save your life will make a good story  ;D

Well i say you can just find anywhere with rails to vault over. Maybe jump down steps and practice your roll? Or find a local park/playground. Great fun. Anyone can train on a playground. Parkour is everywhere. Train yourself to look for it. Now everytime i am in a car driving somewhere i always look around for sites of parkour. Once you get into Parkour it will be surprising how much you will find it.
