Protein shake
« on: April 11, 2009, 02:23:23 PM »
So liek, my mom just came up with an idea that I should take at hand. She said that she was going to some gym around a month ago and her coach was suggesting a protein shake. I don't know much about it since my mom can't remember much about it either, but supposedly it's called Protein. >_>

So liek, protein shakes any good?

Supposedly, I can't see it for myself but, I am getting VERY VERY skinny VERY VERY fast and am looking pale. I don't feel any disorder, or anything bad that would cause health damages, but apparently their rotten eyes do. So I want to know what's up with shakes. Are they any good?

Facts about it that I know of:
- The one she is getting me is strawberry flavored I guess.
- It's a mix. (powder)
- The cans, maybe I misheard or she was just guessing, supposedly cost around $60. Or maybe she said $6? >_>

pl0x help meh out.

Are you actually losing weight?

If you've lost a moderate amount of weight and you're a growing teenager you may need to go see a doc. Could be anything like a thyroid disorder or something like that.

Of course, if you're eating the same amount and losing weight that is a big concern.

But if you're like starving yourself...

-In a nutshell, protien is what your body uses to build and repair itself. So after you workout, your body will rebuild itself bigger and faster with protien than it would without. But excess protien becomes fat. So yea they're great when mixed with exercise.
-Get WHEY protien. not muscle milk.
-personally, I perfer vanilla shakes because i like the way that they mix with stuff better.

If I am, I can't see any difference. And when I checked at the doctors, I only lost like 1-5 lbs. But that's cause of training.

I don't eat like they do. They expect me to eat at the exact same time, which is impossible. Unless I just shove food down my throat just cause they are hungry. I'm not always hungry.

I don't starve myself. My build is slim and a bit muscular.

Haha what kind of protein is muscle milk?  In short, please don't give advice on stuff you don't know a whole lot about.  Muscle milk is just a mix of whey, casein, and very very little soy along with some vitamins and a weeeee little bit of sugar (4 grams in 2 scoops)  So yeah lets just keep the random product bashing to a minimum.

Sorry sat, I wasn't saying muscle milk sucks, I just metioned it because his mom obviously dosn't know alot about protien shakes and muscle milk is almost always found right next to the whey.

It's cool don't worry about it, but I still don't understand why you don't think it would be good for him to take.

My new favorite is to mix whey protein powder (chocolate flavor) with a mix of milk and coffee just before a workout. It has a nice mocha flavor and the coffee gives me a nice little buzz before training.

Alternatively, vanilla-flavored whey protein powder with a little orange juice and water=tastes like a Dreamsicle! I'm a little scared to try this with milk; it would up the protein content but I'm afraid the acid in the OJ would curdle the milk.

Some protein powders are designed specifically for weight loss, others are designed to help you put on muscle. So you have to read the label to see what kind you're getting. The kind I most recently bought was $60 for a 3-lb. jar. I probably won't get it again. It tastes all right and nutritionally it's fine for what I need, but I think $60 is a total rip-off. I have found other good protein powders for half that (it's just that the store I used to go to for the cheap stuff stopped carrying it for a while and I had to buy the more expensive stuff--but now the cheap stuff is back!)

I like protein shakes because they are convenient and fast. I wouldn't base my entire diet on them, though.

If you are worried about being underweight I would look for the kind that are designed to help you build muscle. Usually the label has something macho on it like "Super-Builder Ultra-Man Protein XXX Death Powder of Manliness," which always makes me giggle a little but I suppose it makes the dudes spend money on it. ;) Cycle these in with a balanced, natural diet and you should be good.

Was the 3 lb's whey isolate?  Whey isolate can be pretty expensive but I got a 5 lb thing of it for 50 bucks so if you look you can find a better deal.

I'm not sure, Sat. What kind do you have? 5 lb. for $50 is a great price.

It's actually not a protein supplement at all, I am not sure why he linked it...
It's basically mostly a vasodilator with creatine and sugar, plus things like a few vitamins, minerals, aminoacids etc.

By the way I am glad to see at least the topic title spelling was fixed :)

I am absolutely agreeing with Chris on this one, I'm not sure what "Blood Doping" is supposed to mean but the only thing I can come up with is BS.

A quote directly from the linked site: "EPO Blood Doping Technology-Triggers Powerful Anabolic Hormone For Extreme Muscle Pump And Vascularity!"

Robert, you'd be much better off just going to a GNC (or stores like it) and picking up some whey protein shake mix, fast, easy, to the point.
