« on: April 01, 2009, 06:29:54 PM »
First off for everyone who does not like when people just post and not look to see if they can find your problem i did look.

Ok well i was out training with a few of my friends and i got dive rolls over a bench.
but then the next day when i went out and tired to do it.
I wasn't rolling correctly.
I completely roll on my back now and it kills.

When you practice rolls a lot, especially dive rolls, even with good technique, it's quite easy to develop bruises on your shoulder, back, and hip. When still developing your roll, it's a good idea to drill them, take a few days rest, then go again. Right now your rolls probably hurt because you are bruised or sore from that day with your friends.

practice practice practice. Bad rolls happen every once in a while but drilling them a ridiculous amount is what keeps your body remembering the technique, obviously with something that can be as hard on the joints as a dive roll you gotta be careful with but drilling your roll regularly is what will keep your rolls( and dive rolls) consistent.

Practice doing rolls as slowly as possible.  I mean slow.  Do it over and over again, paying attention to what your body is doing and whether that is good or not.  On the next one, remember the good parts and try to fix the parts that need fixing.  Practice that for a while and then go back to going full speed and diving.  It can also help to go back to the slow rolls every so often just as a refresher.  It's a lot harder to do something slowly than it is to do it at full speed where you momentum working for you

I partly agree and partly disagree. It's a good thing to do for feeling, but a slow roll is light years different from a fast roll. The entire purpose of our roll is to transfer momentum, so if you do a roll with no momentum, you miss out on a lot of information. Do some slow rolls to get a feel of your technique, but do them fast as well, if you're new to them, on a soft surface so no damage is done. Doing them fast will teach you where your momentum is going and where your impact points are.

Maybe you're just flopping onto your back instead of absorbing a bit more with your arms and then rolling? I remember I did that first, and then took it to my gym to correct it.

I haven't seen him do them lately but I'll speak for him since he is hardly ever on. He does flop, but I have noticed that when he is "in the mood" to run he does them MUCH better than when he is tired or when I make him go with me =]

So maybe its more of a mental issue? Like, not exactly always being in the mood for parkour.

( Although I don't know how not being in the mood for parkour is even possible ;) )

I have no clue either, I know that his sleep pattern is rather irregular and I think maybe he doesn't always feel like running with US in particular. I had the same problem when I was skating... I hated skating with people better than me because I didn't ever know what to do. But he has been learning at a MUCH fast rate now. If he ran as much as we did he would be as good or better by now.

Yeah, very true.

Seems like he needs something to inspire him, I remember when I first started I had a few times when I would stop and go "..why am i doing this?"

Motivation really helps, and what you said is very true also.

when he got the dash vault (before either of us, I'd like to mention) he wanted to run for about a week. Same when he first got dive rolls. He also, like the rest of us, have little stamina, which we are all trying to up.
