Grip
« on: June 05, 2006, 10:27:39 AM »
While practicing hanging from ledges, I've noticed that my hands' grip seem to give out much sooner than my arms. Any recommendations or tips on how to increase gripping strength?

You should try asking in the "Fitness" section.

Every so often, just go to your local rock climbing gym.  It does wonders for finger strength.

At your local gym, set the safety pins a bit below waist level in the squat rack. Now go and load the bar with a lot of weight. Then grasp the bar and hold it tight for as long as you can. Don't let it dangle at the tip of your fingers either... Find the proper weight for you to do maybe like 4 sets of 30 seconds. The burn should be pretty good, and you can handle massive amounts of weight on that exercise too.

A substitute to this if you don't have access to a weights room would be to hang from a bar with one arm as long as you can. Repeat 3-4 times and try to improve your time every day. You can add some weight by putting a few dictionaries in a backpack too.

peace.

Yeah, bar hangs for as long as you can are great. They are also a good stretch for your arms and back as well as being a good way to decompress your spine.

Fingertip pushups won't help your grip much at all, as they aren't a gripping position. Try what PPK said, heavy supports rock (along with farmers walks) for supporting strength/endurance.

Sandbag training does a lot of good yes. You can also carry something squeezable like a tennisball with you all the time and pinch and squeeze it when you feel like it. You can buy these jelly things from Nike that were made for this goal. I have one next to my computer so whenever I'm bored I pinch and squeeze the thing. I've also read very positive reviews on powerballs. You can look them op on google but they are a little expensive. Hanging from a bar with either one or two hands is also cool, in the mean time you can do some leg lifts  :P

Try tossing some towels over a bar or tree branch and work some chin-ups. Cheap and easy way to strengthen the grip.

Hmm I might be a bit in the grey as I've never attempted sandbag training myself but I think it's really anything you feel like doing with your sandbag. If it's reasonably heavy (I'm thinking at least 70-80 pounds), doing sandbag overhead presses (without using any straps that might be on it, but only "pinching" the sandbag) could prove quite challenging. Actually it should be hard to even get it up to chest level as it'll slip around a lot. I've also heard of people attaching a heavy bag to a rope and then dragging the sandbag as fast as they could across a field (or you could also carry it, that would be much better for your grip). And as I write this I'm thinking you can do some sort of circuit training with that and some other things to focus on a good grip strenght... Just a suggestion though.

Maybe it could go like this:
repeat 3 times, rest 3 minutes between circuits and no more than 20-30 seconds between exercises, to be done in an open field with something to hang from nearby

2 minutes skipping (just for the sake of putting some cardio in there)
Sandbag carry 50 yards
Complete five full sandbag overhead presses (no cheating!)
Towel chin-ups, to near-failure (stop 1 rep short of failure)
One armed hanging, to near-failure
Farmer's walk, to complete failure (if you own dumbbels)

That should really pound the crap out of your forearms.

peace.
Strenght & Honor,
Joe

Thanks PPK :D.  I dont have any sandbags, but I'll go out and get some heavier weights and use those with one arm hangs and such.

This may be the most impractical thing, but...go practice Cat jumps on walls outside, lol.  I dunno.  It would prolly work for most people.  Just jump, do some pull ups, drop down, rinse and repeat.
