Help with the wallrun in depth
« on: February 25, 2009, 07:57:17 PM »
Here's the deal. I have been throwing myself at the wall run ever since I started parkour about a month ago. I was immediately able to scale up and over an 8 foot wall no problem. But I have been unable to get any higher.

With my small amount of experience it's obvious that I need more practice, but I feel that it is mainly because my muscles just aren't strong enough. My wall run is more like a wall 'jump'. I go at the wall, plant the ball of my right foot about waist high and leap upwards. I've never successfully done more than one step, so I'm not sure if you'd call this a wall run, or a mutated tic-tac, but there is clearly something wrong with my approach.

I keep my body vertical, leaning slightly inwards and I throw my arms up to catch onto the ledge, which works just fine for a seven to eight foot wall, but I want to go higher.
I do not put my hands on the wall.

So I know that somebody is going to find a few hiccups in my approach to this technique, but I will gladly accept any other advice that you may have for me. Maybe tell me how to do two steps or so, perhaps list some certain exercises that I can do to strengthen my legs, maybe tell me your method of conquering a wall that is higher that eight feet.

Thanks a bunch

It'd be easier to gauge technique off of a video, and since yours didn't make the most sense I'll just overview what technique I use and maybe it will work for you.

I want to take a good pace at the wall, not too fast but kind of explode when you get a couple steps away, place the foot about hip high, enough that you have to do a little hop to get to the wall and you want to keep your back straight and focus all your momentum up. Things like using one hand to slap the wall as you go up may or may not help, not sure as its mostly a personal preference thing. More importantly than more than one step is making your step as useful as it can be, quality over quantity. There is a baseline for technique but some things you'll have to figure out.

Best of luck man!

Alright. I could tell it was a pretty cruddy description, but thanks for answering.

I am in the process of making a video specifically for wall runs.  If you would like me to send you an older video that you can use, just check me out on aim and i can transfer you the video.  The downloadable video should be up by the end of next week.

aim - animalfreestyle  email ttetting@cc.edu

This is where I really helped someone which is why I am going to put a new video out.
