Palm Pain from Kong Vaults
« on: February 08, 2009, 07:57:40 PM »
Today I dedicated time to mastering the Kong Vault and after maybe 30 minutes my palm side of my knuckles and the place where the base of my thumb meets my wrist hurt a lot. I only just started learning the Kong Vault (I'm relatively new to Parkour/FreeRunning) and I was wondering if I was making some common mistake or if it's something that you just get used to. Also, any recommendations on how to make the pain go away quickly so I can get back out there?

that's your scaphoid, or once called navicular in the wrist.  It is commonly stressed/injured in palm outstretched landing type of forces.  Be wary that it isn't fractured.  If it is, it could be more serious.  Hopefully the pain is low grade, and just give it rest and let it heal.  Ice, compress, rest.  Bracing your wrists with a piece of tape just wrapped around them can help to stabilize the area as well.  Good luck.  If the pain is higher grade, def see a doc for an x-ray

Thank you for your input. The pain feels a lot like that of a bruise, whereas it only hurts if pressure is applied, so I'll give it sometime and hopefully it'll be better. In addition to the tape bracing the wrists, is there a certain hand positioning for a Kong Vault that is less likely to result in injury than another?

most of it is conditioning.  Kong vaults are pretty high impact, especially if your wrists are trained for it.  Steve low has posted afew good exercises on wrist exercises, ie rice bucket exercises.
