Backflip Fear?
« on: February 03, 2009, 05:21:57 PM »
Well Ive been wanting to try a wallflip for a while now, and Im finally comitted. I have been doing some research and have seen almost everywhere that a standing backflip is better to learn first, so i guess ill try that. I have no access to a gym or safety mats or a spotter that is knowledgeable. The main thing I am scared of is that I wont make it all the way around and land on my head... The problem is, I cant jump very high (my vertical jump is only around 20" haha and im 5'10", 15 yrs old, and 145 pounds). What is the best way for me practice this (i saw the thing about practicing lying down and im going to work on that)? And also, what is the best way for me to get over my fear??

Thanks!
-Matt

As far as getting over fear, the only advice I can offer is... Just do it.

Oh yeah it is, but its the only advice I can offer, like I said. Nobody can really tell you how to get over your fear. You have to do it.

Your best bet is to find a gymnastics gym somewhere, and go there on open gym (We have one here that runs 7 bucks on saturdays for 2 hours). Have someone spot you, or practice into the foam pit.

Do you have a trampoline? That is a really good way to get familiar with backflipping. Also i learnt a wall flip  before standing backflip so u might just wanna go for the wall flip then the backflip

I get over my fear by calling myself a loser if I don't do a trick ;D. But my best advice is to practice on something soft like a mattress and then try in something like sand.

P.S.
Personally I find it easier and safer to do a wall flip than a regular/standing backflip.

If it's stupid but it works, it's not stupid.

Everyone is right, no one can tell you how to get over fear, just do it.

The way I progressed over the backflip is :

1. Doing it on a slope, then hurt my knees lol.
2. I learned it the proper way and on leveled ground , then backfliped on higher platforms.
3. Learned how to do one foot backflip(for wall flip) off a platform.
4. I run and land on a short platform, then as quick as I can do a one-foot backflip.
5. then do it on a wall. Step on the wall (like a platform), then one-foot backflip on it.
6. If you can do a wall run, then try 2 steps and one-foot backflip lol.

The way I got over my fear, and tricking myself into commiting is using visualization. I pretend there is a big mat behind my back that i'll land on softly on it (while on grass lol), and I fully commit to it full force.
Jump up,at peak, then rotate. If grass is too big a deal, just do it in a pool.

I have no spotter, gym, nor mats. I just went out there and busted my ass enough to learn lol.

thats what I did to get over backflip and wall flip fear, but I recomend to be familiar with a standing backflip or layout before the wall flip.

People learn wall flips before backflips, which is completly ok. I guess I did it the reverse way lol. :)

For Fear I can only offer this.  Listen to it a couple of times and try to take it to heart.

I personally have taken the mattress off my bed and tried it on that before going to grass and i think it really helps because you loose the fear of landing wrong because its really hard to land on a mattress in such a way that you get gravely injured.. I DID land on my head and the worse that happened was a sore neck for a day or two.

I cant speak for flips but Ive been racing moto-x for 6 years and if I'm scared to hit a massive jump the only way i found to do it is don't let yourself back out once youve done it once or twice you'll realize its not as scary as it looks.
Hope it helps.  ;D

So i had like a killer mental block right, I bailed on a flip and hurt my neck so i couldn't backflip anymore, then I just went on the tramp one day and was like 1, 2, 3 flip...and just kept doing that 1, 2, 3 thing and then it worked no more fear....

but that probably won't help you.

At the gym brian told me, use the balls of your feet for pretty much everything, so steady your breathing go on the balls of your feet, relax, and visualize yourself doing it....then one...two...three...and do it.

if that doesn't help...get drunk!

Ok heres how to get over the fear of backflips:
You need a lot of electric wiring, an electric switch and a car battery.

Now get a friend to connect you to it and do a backflip. If you don't do it they get to shock you as many times as neccesary. Believe me you WILL do it. JK ;D

Just do it, this question has been asked many many times and the response is always "Just do It".

you will think what if this happens to me and be more fearful.
