Soymilk?
« on: May 25, 2006, 03:06:46 PM »
Think it's okay to drink a massive quantity of soymilk?  This is Vietnamese soymilk that's handmade from soybeans (there's a place in Seven Corners that you can get it done).  I drink about three full glasses a day (sometimes less, not too often more) as my substitute for soda and sugary drinks (this soymilk has no sugar added, but there are VIetnamese varieties that are similar to dessert drinks).  Just wondering if it's a good alternative or not. I know it's healthier than what I used to drink... Just wondering how much is excessive.

Occasional consumption of soy isn't the worst thing in the world, but there are a whole host of hormonal issues with over-consumption, especially in males. Soy has a tendency to produce phyto-estrogen which can throw off your entire hormonal balance and lead to a myriad of different helth-problems.

Here's a pretty good article that gets into this issue in-depth:

I used to use soy milk for my protein shakes until I found out about the whole estrogen thing a few months ago. Now I use rice milk.

Yea I kinda freaked out when I first found out about that too.

My mom's a vegan and she's been feeding me large quantities of soy from birth to 13-14 years old.

I think that's partly what lead to me being a skinny 120 pound teenager. Now in college and thirty pounds later, I'm only starting to look like I have a decent shape. Damn all these estrogens!

also rice milk is easy to make at home and (to me) tastes better.

but that goes for about anything we eat though :), well not anything, but a lot.  we pump all our meat products with estrogens and other hormones their whole life.  then we kill em and eat em.  same dealy, but sometimes you cant avoid it.  even organic food doesnt have a real standard (though i hear its been changed recently... and in a good way, but not accurate way)

The hormones etc. are the least of your worries with factory-farmed meat. Every study performed on hormone-induced meat products has shown no correlation with an increase in said chemicals in those who ingest it. What really screws up meat is the fact that they feed cattle nothing but grains, rather than letting them subsist on grasses as they would in the wild. This completely screws up their fatty-acid profile, thus making it too high in saturated and poly-6 unsaturated fats. This is yet another good reason to eat your fish oil along with lean cuts of meat as it will help re-balance this discrepency.
