Different Styles of Movements
« on: January 16, 2009, 05:35:34 AM »
I've been doing some research on movements used for Parkour, and since I'm a beginer, especially rolls. Could anyone kindly inform me which style of roll works best for them, and any instructions on how to do them?  (any other movements are welcome.) Respondez-vous, S'il-vous Plait! ;) (that's what RSVP stands for. French lesson of the day.)  ;D

We have a whole tutorials section on the main page, under "Learn." Check out the roll tutorial here: http://www.americanparkour.com/content/view/264/377/ and here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9Jdx1cHKHU

I'd suggest starting on grass without any sort of drop. Start from a crouched position and work on it. Once you're comfortable, stand up a little bit and go from a slightly more raised crouch position, then move up again and again until you're standing.

At some point, try taking a few steps and then going into the roll. Once you're comfortable with that, take a few steps, take a little hop (to simulate a drop), and then go into the roll.

(This progression should be spaced out over weeks, if not months).

From there, move onto rolling on different surfaces, rolling from SMALL drops (start with 4 inches, then 8, then 12, etc).

Slow progression is what it's all about. :)

And here's a video that's more than 30 seconds long ( ;) ) and explains everything you should need to know about styles of rolls and what they are used for.

Close, but not quite!  ;)  It stands for "Repondez s'il vous plait."

Once you are very comfortable with your rolls on grass/carpet, move on to something harder, like concrete or asphalt. All of a sudden you notice things that are wrong with your roll, which you can then fix.

And Frankly once you have decent roll and move onto concrete, they begin to fix themselves. Your body almost fixes the technique to keep from hurting itself.
