New Year's Training Goals
« on: December 31, 2008, 01:19:23 PM »
Hey all!  There was a thread like this in general discussion a few weeks ago, but it never hurts to do it again!

Here on this last day of 2008, I would like for us all to think about where we are in our training, and where we'd like to see ourselves in the next three months.  April seems like a pretty good distance away, but the months have a tendency to slip past without us really noticing.  If we focus our training, we can make a ton of progress in three months, and I think that would be pretty awesome, don't you?

Post your training goals here.  If you have a problem with finding time to train, schedule a few weekly training days.  If you feel like you're the only one in your area that does parkour, maybe find someone to train with, or make an effort to make it to a larger jam once per month.  If your movement is slacking off, figure out what's broken and how to fix it.

My goals:

 - Life Goals
   - Stop spending so much time on the computer, and get out and enjoy life and the world
      - Get back in touch with parkour
      - Spend more time with people
   - Read at least half my homework every week
 - Strength Goals
   - Deadlift 340x5
   - Squat (285x5)x3
   - Power Clean (155x5)x3
   - Bench Press my bodyweight with dumbbells
   - Press (135x5)x3
 - Hold a handstand for 10 seconds
 - Start HIIT with my usual training

I hope everyone finds this as useful as I do!  Try to stick to a short list of specific, achievable goals.  Too many goals can make you overwhelmed, but too little might not motivate you enough.  For me, I have only four general goals, with some micromanagement thrown in there so things are specific.  If your goals aren't specific enough, then you probably don't have a good enough idea of what you want to get out of said goal.

What formula's are you using to get these numbers? (Doubling what you can do now? Ect.) I'm trying to set up some goals of my own and I am really just throwing a dart in the dark and hoping.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

If you're just beginning, then a good goal might something like completing the full APK Warmup every day for two weeks.  Once you can do that (it's not easy, let me tell you), then see if I can time yourself, and do it a little faster each time.  Once you've established this foundation, you can start taking part in the APK WOD, or setting your own, more personalized goals and pursuing them.  If you want to find out how many pushups (or clapping pushups or burpees or...) the human body is capable of, then set a goal that you think will challenge you and work towards it.

As for myself, I've been lifting regularly for the past 9 months or so and I have a great guide to help me along, so I know where I'm at and where I've come from, which is a great foundation on which to build goals.
