Help on keeping handstand in one position.
« on: December 13, 2008, 05:12:46 PM »
Hey guys,

I can walk on my hands for a decent period of time..  55 seconds is the last time I recorded.  But I can't seem to stay in one spot!  I try to keep my weight directly above me and hold my body stiff; I keep having to walk.

   Does anyone have any advice?

 Thank You

yeah my advice, would be to even if you feel like you have to walk, fall instead. you developed a bad habit when you started walking before you could hold one without moving. the only way to break this habit that i know of would be to stop doing it till you feel comfortable with the length of time you can hold one in place.

though i cant even hold one for 5 seconds yet, so i may not be the best person to get info from.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

lol...anyways, go back to using a wall, but don't touch it.  just keep your feet like 1" from it.  Check your hand position, and straightness of your body.

Hmm, that's a decent idea!  Thanks!

Ok, now do I try and keep dead strait?  Or arch my back a bit and get my feet over my head to balance ( I've seen different techniques )

Thanks for the input guys.

From my understanding (I'm no expert), both methods are 'valid' if you can control them.  Generally, the straight body version is more accepted, and tends to have better balance.  My advice would be to focus on tightening your abs, and tightening your hamms/glutes, and keeping your head neutral (looking at your hands through your eyebrows).

^Hmm, it's harder for me to look behind me thru my eyebrows..  I tend to try and look strait down at the floor.  I'll try that, thanks.

Now this is probably a stupid question, and I probably already know the answer, but does everyone feel like they're heavy as freakin' hell when they're doing a handstand? I have pretty decent bodywight-relative upper-body strength, but I still feel like a block of lead.

I have about equal/more lower body weight and I only feel heavy when I am falling. When I am ballanced I feel great.
A bad traceur does a move untill he gets it right. A great traceur does it untill he is not able to get it wrong.

I'm no handstand expert, but I've heard things that should help: Don't hold your breathe, breath. And also I believe spreading your fingers out will help keep your balance.

What I found that helps (that someone already said) was just do it up against a wall and slowly move your legs away from the wall and just hold it that way. Has helped me a lot.
