WHy are there so many Parkour haters?
« on: December 08, 2008, 06:31:54 AM »
Okay you guys know a while ago I posted about some idiotic parkour hater...well its happened again I was at a local park just rolling around and having some fun racing my friends with QM and stuff and 3 kids (not exactly athletic they were kind of computer potatoe looking kids) start laghing at us and acting like jercks so my friend and I walk up and ask "what?" they said it was "funny, parkour was such a stupid sport and you losers are doing it" I dont get it guys I have met just as many haters as traceurs in this place and its just getting weird. Parkour is only like, what 18 years old and there is this much haters of it already? Why do they hate it so much?

im not an authority on the subjct but i've taken part in more than a handful of "non-traditional" activities, sport and other. it seems to me that there are always people who will react to the unfamiliar with mockery. i've just learned to laugh it off knowing that more often than non the " haters" really wish they could do what we do. (i know for a fact that after i told some guy what rugby was and he ridiculed me, he went home and watched rugby youtube vids)

pk is new, and therefore is "the new kid at school", eventually the other kids will notice how cool and confidany pk is and go back to picking on curling and bowling.

p.s. i know it's a shame pk is seen as a sport at all but at least in the state the general view is that it's a fringe sport like skateboarding and bmx.

Are you suggesting that people make fun of curling?! (I'm Canadian).

I'm sure you know this already but I wouldn't take something a computer potatoey kid says. You know he's going to go home and play Assassins Creed or Mirrors Edge after anyway.

HEY NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT  :P

Just ignore/laugh it off when people make fun of you. You're the only one who can control how others make you feel !!

Starting in the early '80s, my friends and I spent a solid decade being called "skate-fags." That subsided as skating hit a second, and massive revival. By then, people were making fun of the "fruit-booters". Parkour is very new and still very unknown around the states. People make fun of what they don't understand, so I would expect the ridicule to continue for a bit.

That has nothing to do with parkour.

Even if you weren't doing anything, people would just find another excuse to mess with you, because you're too well dressed or not well-dressed enough, etc.
My point might be best expressed by the last 30 seconds in this clip:
http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/210822/

And as Mark pointed out you shouldn't be encouraging people who are trying to antagonize others by approaching them and interacting with them.

you should point out that parkour is not very much of a sport, it is a discipline.....a very amazing discipline that in some ways alows you to use a loophole to get around gravity.
also,
Maybe if you do a dive roll race, or sonic roll race, they might be more interested in parkour, and wont harass you for doing it

Note: you're not really suposed to show off for parkour at all, you're just supposed to do it for yourself,
but i think that if people think what i'm doing is stupid then i have to show off a tiny bit so they have a positive attitude toward parkour, and accept what i'm doing

it's like
'this kid is soo stupid'
or
'Thats AMAZING!!'

Nope, you shouldn't point out anything. Do you think that people are going to go from "taunting jerks" to interested, caring, considerate traceurs because you take the time to pander to their antagonisms?

Weird... I haven't had this experience at all. Everyone I talk to seems really enthusiastic and wants to know more.

And yea, Marks right. Don't try to have a mature conversation with people that obviously can't handle it.

I think some people were watching us since they thought it was so weird so my friend just up and did a backflip which seemed to have legitimized our workout in their eyes. I know, I know, who cares, but whatever... it took care of them and we just kept on training!

thats wierd. i never met anyone who hated parkour. most people i meet are intreeged and want to get into the sport. You should tell 'em that video games dont count as an athletic skill and as ur walkin away do something realy impressive to make ur comment land.

Haha potatoey, thats a great word for them.

I hate to seem like an ass-kiss and suck up to the admin, but he's totally right. Even Soldiers in uniform catch bullshit from people sometimes. It's a free country; you're free to do practice your discipline, and they're free to snicker about it. Just make sure you also practice the self-discipline to stay above their level.

M2 is always right.

lol.

but yeah, you can always just take comfort in the fact that you are achieving things that those kids will probably never achieve physically, and this is probably why they make fun of you. Also, people tend to have violent reactions to things that scare and confuse them. Or at least, weak people do.

Well personaly i haven't experienced parkour due to i cant get out to train. but i use my basement floor (close enough to concrete  :P) but I know I'm going to experience haters. I have my strategy, they will come up all Bad ass ::) (i know they will) and then theyll be all like fag etc. I'll just say ok and walk away, or run when they chase after me
