Shin Pain
« on: April 25, 2006, 04:35:36 AM »
One day after doing some simple practice and doing a couple of drops maybe 5-7 feet high maybe more but nothing serious my shins started hurting.  Now everytime I do anything but walk on them it starts hurting.  It's extremely hard to not do anything and I'm wondering if someone else had this problem.

Generically speaking u probably have a form of shin splints that is generally considered an overuse injury.  Typically this occurs in individuals that participate in sports with lots of running or jumping.  There isn't much u can do for shin splints other than RICE the injury.

Haha, you beat me to it ;)

Needless to say REST!! I didn't, and I've had horrible shin splints for the past 2 1/2 years constantly nagging me and making me want to murder the entire population of the earth every time I bang them on something even lightly!!!

Seriously, take some time off, when you come back, work up more-slowly. Stretch frequently, make sure you're wearing good shoes, and ice as soon as you start to feel soreness.

Good luck! :D

yes, rest.

in addition, the splints are being caused by something.  this is either your running form, your shoes forcing your legs into bad form, strength imbalance between your muscles, or simple overruse when your legs aren't used to the workload.

because they can be caused by one or more of these things, it can be tough to find out what.  personally, my splints have been getting less severe by running with better shoes with some superfeet insoles, and occasional barefoot training to strengthen my stabalizer muscles.  you're going to have to play around alot to find out how to alleviate those splints.

Method we use in track:
-find big bucket
-fill with cold water and lots of ice
-insert legs into bucket

Do that for about 15 minutes or until they are numb, makes it feel a lot better.  If it's that bad I'd do it once or twice a day

Doing a couple of 5-7ft drops can really aggravate your shins. When you're better, improve your landing technique, strengthen your body (legs, abdominals, back, shoulders), and do drops sparingly.

aight, heres what it sounds like to me.

the tib ant muscle is the primary braking mechanism in the ankle.  when there is a high velocity impact put into it, to dorsiflex the foot, the tib ant activates (since you are pointing your toes before a big landing) to eccentrically contract and absorbe the impact.  when this is done repetitively, the tib ant muscle can do a few things that results in what common MDs and PTs call "shin splints"  according to them, this is a incurable thing, and all you can do is ice it and basically numb it (yet you can supposedly continue using it... )  i had shin splints in the past, and i just iced it, like told., and it only got worse and worse.

so anyway, here's what i would recommend.  when you repetitively do these high force eccentric contractions, the fascia of the muscle may end up getting distorted and basically develope what is known as microadhesions within the muscle.  in addition, the muslce itself may go into a spastic state where it has difficulty relaxing.  to sum up what you can do though, without going too much in depth... go to the center of the muscle belly (right by the big sharp shin bone), and take your thumbs, pulling the muscle fibers outward.  then like i told someone else, rub the insertion origin of the muslce, which is located on the superior 1/3 of the tibia (the shin bone, between the actual muslce and bone)  rub that real hard, then go to the bottom of the foot, on the medial side and rub that area real hard.  if done correctly, you can get rid of those shin splint right away, and make sure that they dont come back :)
