Shin damage
« on: November 19, 2008, 03:28:35 PM »
As I train ever fervently for kongs, trying to clear my object and kong for the first time (yes I have difficulty konging). My problem is I have a hard time getting my feet on top of the object before clearing. Now, whenever I'm training for this (recently, as I have been working on running/upper body) I sometimes my feet will slip off, and I'll bash my shins against the corner of the object with all my body weight, and it hurts. So, I got shin sleeves (these cloth/foam sleeves you slip over onto your shins through your feet that compress your shin) and they seem to be relieving pain. Is this enough to help the pain and damage go away, or should I avoid konging?

Work your Monkeys. They will teach you how to get your legs up higher so you don't bang.

You're probably not leaning your upper body forward enough. Also, try to gain some flexibility, especially in the hips, that will probably help quite a bit!

I've bashed my shins plenty of times too, I'll usually give it a day or two of rest and then return to my normal routine.  As long as it doesn't hurt when you're exercising you should be fine, just try not to hit it again. It's never caused any permanent damage to me, although I have had some hits leave hard lumps in their places for a couple months.

I have a plan! After all, I am the man with the master plan. My idea is... *Drumroll*... Wear soccer shin guards when you train kongs. Just until you get it to where you never bash your shins anymore. That way, if you do, it won't hurt. *gasp!* Not being sarcastic. In all seriousness, I think this will help, man. Just me, though.

Gotta say I agree. The sleeves are probably good too, especially if they help. But if you're injured and in pain, take a pause and let yourself recover first. If you train while hurt, you'll start developing bad habits and tendencies (not to mention making yourself more self-conscious about every movement, which can hinder flow and result in MORE injury).

Don't give up on the kongs though! Keep trying and you'll get it. Practice monkey vaults first to get the feel of it, then move on. =D
