How do you condition?
« on: November 09, 2008, 08:48:09 AM »
Well as we all know, conditioning is very important for Parkour. So i'm still deciding how I want to condition exactly and want to see how a few others do theirs.

What i've thought of is the APK WOD everyday. But what about those days when I don't do it and just decided to do flow work or vaults? The WOD is designed to strengthen your body all around and not just the arms over and over right? So if you skip one day won't you be ruining your routine? This seems more of a tough regime to me.

I've also thought about making my own workout for those days when I'm going to train just technical exercises instead of ones that work technical and physically at the same time (i.e. cat leaps). The problem is besides just stressing my arms and shoulders doing lots of push ups and pull ups, or my legs with pistols and squats, I don't really know what would be a good workout would be that gets pretty much all of the Upper Body or the Lower Body.

Go to Demon's Drills and check out all of them especially "Gauntlets."

Also, go check out the training log section and read through them. Should give you an idea what other traceurs are doing.

That would probably be something that is related to what you want to accomplish.

i personally wouldn't recommend the wod. they are really good exercises, however strict training routines are no fun and they, a lot of times, result in over training injuries (like my freakin knee! :-X), also they don't translate into technical ability as well as plain jane repetition of technical training. just like in gymnastics, if you perform the movement with perfect technique several times it is an amazing exercise and translates exactly into technical ability.

i just read this article for the first time today (im not sure how i missed it) and im going to be doing a little simplifying to my routine. i was already headed in this direction, blane just put it into words for me.   maby this will help you as much as it did me.

Disagree to a point. Charles has written up something on this as well.

I disagree...

First off, the WOD is random, so its not a strict routine by nature.

Secondly, if you do each technique propery, u shouldnt get over training.  If you do, you're doing something wrong (like squatting on your toes, for example)

Not that there is a problem with repetition of skills, which is great for skill training, but for conditioning and strengthening, you need to do more than drill skills.

Plus conditioning will translate into technical ability.

sorry if it sounded like i was dogin on conditioning, i should have added  i wouldn't recommend only strength conditioning.  conditioning is very important, but don't get too wrapped up in it or your technical abilities will lack.    also i know matthew personally so i am aware that he already has a foundation in strength training.  i would never recommend technical conditioning to someone who has been doing parkour for under two years.

evan though it's not the most advanced I just condition through movement, just do some thing you have a bit of truoble with and do it over and over and over until it becomes easy.

Goals for Training:
-Land a Frontflip Outside again √
-Kong a table over seats √
-Kong a Picnic Table Longways
-Make a decent sampler/video
-Find new places to train
-Land a Sideflip Outside √
