Test your roll
« on: April 19, 2006, 05:32:26 PM »
I found this out by accident, if you want to test how accurate your rolls are wait til a day after a storm when it was hot that day and most of the water evaporate, and the soil is slighly moist, and do a roll with a light colored shirt on. the mud leaves a clean skid mark(s) of where you contacted.

Its like a trace.

didn't notice it til i got home.

well its really dry thin layer, i didn't even notice it til i got home. but the grass has to be semi moist so some sticks on. just a suggestion.

You made me laugh psycosis, but other than looking like you have "shit on your back" it is smart to see how you roll.

you can also just spray some water on a hard surface instead of waiting for a rainy day and getting all muddy :)

A couple of weeks ago I was on a run with the wife, I did a roll on some dusty bricks and it left a perfect "brick wall" pattern on the back of my hoodie ... it was a pretty cool design.

Someone taught me the best "rolling gauge" a long time ago:

Roll on concrete or asphalt 10 times.

Not only will you be able to sense every little nuance of your roll, but you will also sub-conciously perfect your technique to minimize the pain.

Of course, it's no fun at all :-)

Asa, would you roll off a jump or just from standing? i figured it won't hurt to practice(well in this case maybe)

It depends on how confident you are with your rolls. For you though, since I've seen you in the workshop and jamming, I would say start from kneeling, build up to standing and if it doesn't bother you, jump from the ground.

Sounds like an interesting way to see how you contact the ground during a roll.

I admire you M2, not many men can say "I was on a run with the wife" in parkour context.  You've done good for yourself  :)

haha I wish Quazar. For her, "Parkour" is jumping up or down a one foot wall .. but give her time :)
I'm happy enough that she likes to go running

I wish emily enjoyed running or jogging.   :-\  But she does enjoy bike rides maybe i should see how long i could keep up with her.  One other way i have tested my roll is with sand.  and look at the impression your back makes with the sand.

okay, so i tried Asa's suggested method, though i did 5 rolls from kneeling and 5 rolls from standing on asphault. (not in any particular order)

now...my torso hurts

i need to practice more....alot more, luckily i don't have that strange desire to jump off of really high things onto concrete.

btw, i either hit the base of my shoulder blade, or my pelvis, one or the other.  i always hit one of them though.  so, i'm not slamming the top of my shoulder into the ground, but i'm putting weight on my shoulder blade, because when i extend my arm up it sticks out a little...and i don't know how to alleviate this problem.  on the pelvis, i can never seem to get my left leg right where it should be without straightening out my back...i think i don't work

my girlfriend is a traceur and its awesome, we talk about pk dates and everything. Anyway, i was jumping off a swing set and landed and rolled in the gravel/sand/whatever and i had a black shirt on, so when i got up you could see the path of my roll down my back. I didnt realize this until dan (quazar) told me that my back looked cool and that according to my back my roll was pretty good. So, id thought id add that into the mix of testing your roll without getting wet/damp but instead gravely/sandy.

whats the point of testing your roll in soft mud or gravel or grass or whatever? does it really matter what the back of your shirt ends up looking like? here's a better way...go roll on concrete and if it hurts, your roll needs some work.

it lets you know if your roll is ok. It doesnt say if its perfect but it still says if you did it at all. Im not sayin go out and do it, im just sayin if you jump and roll in sand or gravel just ask somebody to check out your back to see thats all.
