Changing my breakfast
« on: October 28, 2008, 05:07:31 PM »
I would like to change my breakfast into something more healthy.
Right now, I have 2 cups of milk, and a peanut butter+ jelly sandwich. Sandwich: I do not like the taste, it's too sticky (takes forever to eat), I still feel hungry after eating it, and it can't be very nutritious.
What can I change it to? I eat it on my ride to school.
I need something that I can prepare quickly the night before.

Oatmeal.  If you need to be fast, mix some protein powder into your milk....else, i suggest eggs...or making some extra chicken the night before and eating it with breakfast...

You can mix your nut butters in with the oatmeal and it's quite tasty.  I do it every morning im not fasting.

Hard-boiled eggs are good, since you can just grab them and go. You can try fixing a whole bunch of them on Sunday, then keep them in the fridge for the rest of the week. Protein in the morning = awesome.

Another thing that's awesome is oatmeal. It doesn't sound portable, but if you put it in a sealed plastic container the night before, it actually works pretty well (as long as you're not the one driving). What I like to do is to make some plain oatmeal (not the instant kind) and then mix in a bunch of cut-up fruit, and maybe some nuts or plain yogurt before I put it in the fridge. Then I stick it in the microwave for 2 minutes the next morning (with or w/o milk) and it's ready to go.

Also try doing a search in the recipes thread...Muse of Fire's mini-quiches would probably work pretty well here too.

Edit-Lol, apparently Chris already thought of the oatmeal thing while I was writing this...

scrambled eggs with EVOO, 3 or 4 eggs, two handfuls of spinach and sometimes some extra meat takes me literally 5 minutes to make and clean up from and another 5 minutes to eat.

steak and eggs with some fruit. Possibly something fattening like EVOO

You can actually do this by making the steak the night before and reheating it when the eggs are cooking...

Cooking eggs literally takes 5 minutes..

I say this because at first it doesn't seem like a quick meal :P

Eggs take like.. two minutes to cook.

A good steak cooks in like.. four minutes.  Sometimes less.

Interesting...
Thanks, everyone!
I think I will add some eggs and fruit.
I'm not sure about the convenience of oatmeal and I don't have time to heat the meat before I leave, so I don't think I can have that.
Anything that would specifically replace the peanut butter jelly sandwich? Anything convenient to replace the bread?

i really wanted an egg sandwich today but bread is bad, so i used sliced ham. heat it in the same pan as you cook eggs(not at the same time). maybe not portable, but makes an egg sandwich better.

Oatmeal.  If you need to be fast, mix some protein powder into your milk

Wait, as in, mix it into the milk you put into your oatmeal?  Because I tried this with chocolate protein powder and it was kinda terrible.

EDIT: Yes, oatmeal is good.  If you have time to cook, use steel-cut oats.  That stuff is delicious, and much better for you.  It takes some thirty minutes to cook, though.

Generally, we don't like grains.

Oatmeal is somewhat of an exception.

If you aren't interested in going "true" or "strict" paleo, then oatmeal is fine since the GI is relatively low, it has a good micronutrient profile and it has a good amount of fiber.

If you are interested in going strict paleo, avoid oatmeal as it is a grain.

I noticed that you listed quinoa as an exception in your diet article as well.  Any elaboration on that?

A lot in my article is not made with "true" paleo in mind.  I addressed in the first part of the article that I was not going to cover specific modalities of eating such as high carb, low carb, paleo, etc.  For this reason, Milk and beans are still on my list, though they are not paleo in nature.

Most people when getting started need to get on the right track.  Personally, I am somewhat against Quinoa because it is a seed/grain that is high in caloric density.  The GI of Quinoa, however, is very low and it has a relatively high protein content that helps to buffer absorption.

I have been rethinking this approach, though, and may remove Quinoa all together since it is easy to overconsume on Quinoa. However, when just improving the quality of food, something like Quinoa serves as a nice "filler" to replace things like rice and bread.  I think I may remove quinoa from the list though due to caloric density, though...

Grains, in general, should be avoided for a lot of reasons with few exception.
