A curiosity on size.
« on: October 22, 2008, 04:40:07 PM »
Just a curiosity that crossed my mind a small bit ago: What size rails do you tend to prefer when training various vaults, cat balances, walking on rails, etc... Honestly, I can walk anything wider than my thumb, but everything else is a bit tougher since my hands are so much bigger than it. I was also trying to mess around on my tree which apparently is great for underbars, but the branches can be so large that it gives me serious "emo wrists." What size rails/bars do you prefer when training?

Okay, but for what? I'm just curious, I find myself liking larger rails for things like cat balances, while the larger things are to do vaults on for me.

But that sounds wrong.

The thread name and posts kill me.

I can rarely seem to find a good/safe rail nearby for me to practice on. When I do, it's usually too far away for me to make the trip to practice.

This is exactly my problem, which is why I'm asking other people opinions on prefered size of rails.

I would say anywhere from about an inch and a half thick up to maybe 5-6 inches. I can work anything in there. Any smaller and whatever it is is likely to break, and any larger I cant really fit my hands around well. But it can still be useful for vaulting.

i like a rail with a little more girth, you know like 5" or so, the thicker the better. i also like them to be nice and sturdy, none of this whimpy limp rail shit. also, i always love a smooth, yet grippy layer of paint coating the rail. aaahh ya!

I thought I'd compile all the sweet moments of this topic:

A curiosity on size:

Aaron Ream: Honestly, I can walk anything wider than my thumb, but everything else is a bit tougher since my hands are so much bigger than it. What size do you prefer when training?

X3Moda: For me, just about anything i can fit my hand around.

Aaron Ream: Okay, but for what? I'm just curious, I find myself liking larger ones.

Sam "Notsolittleninja": Something as thick as my fist.

Jake: I would say anywhere from about an inch and a half thick up to maybe 5-6 inches. I can work anything in there. Any smaller and whatever it is is likely to break, and any larger I cant really fit my hands around well.

Matthew W: Well the one's I work with are around an inch and a half. I do everything I can on them

Dylan Baker: i like one with a little more girth, you know like 5" or so, the thicker the better. i also like them to be nice and sturdy, none of this whimpy limp shit. aaahh ya!

This topic should be stickied for how amazing it is.

Personally, I can handle anything as long as it doesn't move on me or isn't too slippery. Trees I usually see don't work too well since they normally have an awkward angle and have points from broken branches that can stab through my hand.

I like large rails the best.  Like 6" in diameter.  Though I'm stuck training on rails that are like 2" in my town.
