Better of the 5.10's?
« on: October 07, 2008, 02:20:59 PM »
Ok, so I'm debating between whether to buy the 5.10 Savants, or the 5.10 Freerunning shoe http://www.rockcreek.com/products/listing/item12659.asp

If anyone has tried the latter, can you tell me which one is better? Love to know by the end of tomorrow if possible :D

I personally like the Freerunner... it's a more well rounded shoe... the Savant is a bit more niche... it's great at taking big drops but not very flexible.

Speaking of which... anyone notice... I changed my Signature. ;)

Hmm, any explanation for us, Jason?

EDIT:: Stealth® Mystique Sole... Compared to the original FR's Non-marking Stealth® Phantom Sole?

Does this mean that it is marking? Uh oh...

The 'Alien Glow' Freerunner

the AG is simply the name of the color.
It's essentially the Freerunner 2.

Re-worked upper for more support, more stability and improved flexibility.

EDIT:: Stealth® Mystique Sole... Compared to the original FR's Non-marking Stealth® Phantom Sole?

Does this mean that it is marking? Uh oh...

It can not be called non-marking... but in my experience, while it is more than the Phantom... it's certainly less than other shoes... in fact, though i have used it in a limited basis, I don't remember ever having the "oh wow, that's a big mark." moment that I have had with other shoes...

It is the same rubber compound used on the Daescent, which has been very popular for Freerunning and there are probably people on this forum who could probably give rather informed opinions of how 'marking' it is in the real world.

It has higher friction than Phantom.

Think about that... What is widely regarded as the grippiest shoe... this is 50% higher friction than that.

It also has more than twice the durability of other high friction rubber...

To give you an idea, Freerunners soles are 4mm... Daescent, 2mm... 2mm Mystique on the Daescent outlasts 4mm Phantom on the original freerunner...
4mm Mystique on the New Freerunners should be... well... ridiculously durable.

Just how durable? When first developed, it was breaking grinding wheels at the factory when attempting to grind down rough edges on cut pieces... we had to actually come up with a new method to deal with this rubber.

I know the non-marking thing may be an issue for some people...
To be honest, since the release of the original Freerunner we got more feedback indicating people wanted more durability than we ever did during it's development about wanting non-marking...

Since the release of the Daescent, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive about grip and durability... with almost no-comment about marking.

We will still offer a Freerunner with non-marking Phantom, The original Red and Grey lives on for those that would rather sacrifice durability and grip in order to 'leave no trace'. But we now also offer Freerunenrs with Mystique for the Traceur/Freerunner who wants the absolute highest possible friction and durability. Mystique is the pinnacle of rubber technology... 25 years of R&D to achieve this no-compromise compound...

it would be a shame to 'waste' it on rock climbing shoes ;)

Ok, so now I'm confused. The shoe I was looking at was the Freerunner, and now this shoe that you're coming out with (or is it already out?) is the "Freerunner 2" in essence. So, should I wait for the 2nd or go with the original? O_O

Depends...

Do you want non-marking Phantom Rubber?

or do you want the Highest Friction and Durability?

I know I can not wait for the new shoes to arrive, I will be grabbing the first pair. :)

OH BOY!

I've always wanted a pair of 5.10's, so I think I will wait for the AG!

Man, I'm getting stoked just thinking about the grip, muwahaha. I run up a wall, but once i touch the wall I can just walk. If that makes sense to anyone besides myself ha.

Hey Jason.  A couple questions:

Is there no way these can be made in the original color scheme?  Or any colors aside from that hideous lime green  :P  :P     :-Sarcasm

Seriously man, I'm trying to dig it but I just cant.  It stands out and is all... well, is it just me guys?  It would be GREAT if it came in a different color scheme.

I'm normally not picky about looks as functionality is what matters, however, they could be a much better looking shoe with some simple color adjustments IMO.

Secondly, how is mistique rubbers grip on bars and smooth surfaces?

There is another colorway coming for guys

plus one for the girls, built on a women's specific last

and the original is still available with Phantom rubber.

Though i love the green colorway... Best so far in my mind, especially in person.

they look weird.  i would have to get used to them.

On the main site just hit the Alien Glow banner on the right side of the site. It'll link you to the shoes.

Depends...

Do you want non-marking Phantom Rubber?

or do you want the Highest Friction and Durability?

I know I can not wait for the new shoes to arrive, I will be grabbing the first pair. :)

So let me get this right:

UN-marking phantom rubber
weird color (depends, i actually like it now)

OR

possibly marking rubber with more friction and durability
support +
stability +
flexibility +

if thats the case then this really should be a no-brainer. right?

I suppose you could always get them and spray paint them black if you don't like the color. I'm still pissed my original freerunners not only gave out after a month, but the license plate said California. I'm from Texas, I don't even know where that is!

That said, I'll probably end up trying them. Just to see how long they take to destroy.
