10-15 foot Drops....
« on: July 15, 2008, 06:19:38 PM »
Alright... for about 4 weeks now  I have been building up    to a 15 foot drop from atop of the youth building over at church is there any advice anyone could give before I go out tommorrow and give it a try? I think its like a 15.5 16 foot drop in actuality...  I'll let yall know how I do...

Do a small warm-up before the jump. While on the roof, lower yourself down the wall and do a 180 towards the actual landing and roll out. Do this a few times to get a feel for it then go for the jump. Make sure you have a pal there with you and be sure to roll out to make sure your ankles live to see another day. Goodluck man and get a vid/pic.

Well, you probably knew someone would say this, but...

My advice is don't do it. In Parkour training, 4 weeks is comparable to...nothing. Many have trained for years, and still don't take those drops.

I'll throw a few analogies out there about the 4 weeks, and hopefully one relates to you:
  • It's like playing Tony Hawk 2 for an hour, then going to a skatepark and thinking you're going to drop in a 10ft bowl for the first time.
  • It's like studying a preview for Ocean's 11, then going out to rob a casino[good luck].
  • It's like thinking you can do a standing back tuck, just because you practiced them underwater at a friend's pool.

Now, it's possible that you'll do it and be fine, so I don't want to be a downer. Good Luck if you decide to go for it!

I know you'll let us know how it goes. :o

Please don't. Seriously. Parkour is about more than drops and destroying your joints. It's your choice, but it's also your body, and you're gonna have to live with your body all your life. Make wise decisions.

Big drops are something you do when you need to, not something you need to practice. Anyone can drop through lots of air, that doesn't take practice. Work on walking on rails, and work on your techniques. Those are the things that need time and training.

Just thought I'd add a tidbit...

The Yamakasi don't allow their students to do any drops for their entire first year of training.

Just keep that in mind if you're actually serious about progressing and parkour as a whole.
“You do freerunning or parkour, I don’t know, but both are the same. Some people are worried about it, but they are people that don’t train for too long, people that…in terms of training, aren’t mature yet. […] One day I’d like to wake up, open my window, and everyones doing parkour." -Ali Shelton

When faced with the stress of a life-threatening engagement, we don't rise to the occasion, we descend to our level of training.

The only way to get better at 15 foot drops is to do 20 foot drops.  Then when you do 15 foot drops they will seem easy.

I also find that front flipping out of drops that high gets me to land a lot smoother since I already have rotational force helping me to roll.

My advice is don't try it, you may think your body is strong enough but unless you've been training for a lot of years your tendons/ligaments won't be strong enough to take that kind of drop with out taking damage. You may not feel it but its there tendon strength develops a lot slower than a muscle :/

No one's impressed. Jumping off a 15 foot roof is flat out idiotic.
Please don't. A good rule of thumb is only do drops that you can comfortably do barefoot.
What if you fail?
I won't.

i've been doing parkour now serious for about 5 months.... off and on for the past year..

In Actuality it was a 13 foot drop... I was with a frind today and I just went for it running straight off the roof using the roll technique  that Levi used during his tutorial and everything went great I was surprised by how much hangtime i had actually gotten... wow afterwards so much adrenaline pumping thru my body everything went great. unfortunately, no video I might do it again this sunday...  for the camera...

I have been also practicing my technique... when I meant building up to I mean like drilling my roll to perfection the landing stance that I needed... everything... 16 years old as well... I take Parkour seriously and if case in a real sitiuation that i needed this then i know that I would be able to do it now... its only like a 1-2 time thing...  When I mean I take parkour seriously I mean I dont just runn off doing stupid shit with overlooking it over until I got it going thru my head perfectly... An another thing... I work out 5 days a week in gym and out of gym using workouts suchs as ozzi's where he wrks them into his routine. Working out tho for the past year though...

Make sure you do that front flip i was talking about.  It helps your roll technique like crazy.

Get it on video too, so we can all see you destroy your body, one jump at a time.

Well in the end its your body not ours man, but working things like that with the amount of training you have under your belt is not the way to be, or last for that matter ;)
