begginer....word
« on: March 19, 2006, 09:55:54 AM »
I just got into Parkour....yesterday i think.  Anyways, Ive been jumping off of things for a while, but not Fancy jumps. Theres this house that has a fence thats around 2 1/2 feet and it goes down to a drop thats round 2 feet as well.  So all in all thats 4 feet i wanna know what kind of jumps i can do off this kind of obstacle.  Ive already jumped it like a fence but I have seen intresting jumps in some of the movies Ive seen.  So, for a beginner what kind of jumps should i consider doing off this.

Welcome to the Philosophy of parkour.  You will get a lot of different answers to this but I think the overwhelming response will be something around...

Well the first thing that you should do is think about what your doing and what you want to do.  You want to jump over this obstacle.  There are different ways of doing this but you have to think of why you are doing this first.  If you want to do it because its cool thats awesome but...its not really parkour without the mindset.  So you must first try and find a reason why you should do this.  If it is...I want to get over this because a dog is chasing me or because I want to see what is on the other side.  This is more of what parkour is about.  To be simple parkour is using urban movement or your mind to over come an obstacle in the most proficeint way.  Once you understand this you can start diving into the "different ways" that you can jump over a fence.

APK has a tutorial DVD and some urban movements posted up on the site I suggest that you read AS MUCH AS YOU CAN in the forums about EVER POST and then read and watch these tutorials.  It will help you understand more about what PARKOUR IS.  Yea, sorry to overwhelm you but, action is nothing without mindset -{chopped up sebestain quote} :)

I wouldn't call it the wrong reason. But parkour is more of a discipline than pure "hey it's fun and look at what I can do", tho there is a tad bit of that in the community and in each of us. We get enjoyment out of it I don't think we would do it if it was torture for us to train parkour.
Anyway what Mattew was saying was parkour is about a mindset and then moving in that mindset. And a parkour mindset is either escape or search. So to put it simply parkour movements are supposed to be done efficiently to overcome an object and in the escape situation as quickly as possible. Without this mindset you are simply doing techniques/tricks or whatever you would want to call them.
There is much more to parkour than this, the community and the reason David Belle created the discipline and other resons linked within parkour.
To answer your question, check out the movements section of the forum and download some videos and research more at this site and other sites. And you learn some basic movements that will be the foundation and help you to start. Find a local forum to connect with people in your area.

P.S. to anybody who wants to correct me, such as mods or people who have a better understanding of parkour, if I have put any wrong information on here please do correct me so I don't spread wrong knowledge and I can learn myself.

the parkour movments can be a lot of fun, and a lot of people get a lot of satisfaction out of following the philosophy, too. check it out, and see if you like it or not. otherwise, noone's stopping you from jumping around and having a good time :)
