Phasing in a new diet...
« on: March 16, 2006, 06:39:44 PM »
Hello, I just joined this board and started getting into parkour this week. I found out about parkour from a video game mag of all things (it wasn't from that PSP game either). Some guy was talking about defying physics and they said something about parkour... anyway enough of my introduction. I am a overweight person and I have been changing my diet some and working out a lot for a few weeks now. I read the thread about creatine and other supplements, and I noticed that you guys have a pretty good knowledge for health and fitness. So I guess what I am asking is how should I go about switching to a very healthy diet. I played football for a long time and I know a thing or two about working out, but as far as how to let my diet supplement that and running and stuff I am clueless. I can't imagine it would be good to just starting eating only vegies and nuts tomarrow lol. Any advise or recommended reading would be awesome.

Thank you very much,
Larry Thomas II

Eat as much non-processed foods as possible (e.g. fruits, veggies, lean meats, nuts, etc).  The closer u can get to fresh off the vine or out of the ground the better off u are.  Also, watch your caloric (sp?) intake, saturated/trans fat, and cholesteral (sp?).  That's a pretty good start.  There is also some info in the nutrition section off the main page.  Just remember that food is fuel for the body.  The more effective the food you eat, the better your body will perform.

As for running, I use a combo of distance runs, interval training, and sprint work to burn calories and build up my cardiovascular.  For someone starting out, I would recommend just hitting the pavement the best u can.  Anything is better than nothing.  BUt just as with weight training, take it slow to prevent injury and burnout.  And remember that there are many ways to get cardio training in such as biking, swimming, or just about anything than gets the 'ol heartrate up.

Coastal has it just about right. Eat better food and eat less altogether is the short answer. I've found the Zone diet: http://www.zoneperfect.com works great both for body composition and overall performance. The other benefit is that it gives you knowlege of exactly what you're eating, which can be a huge change, as most people just stuff things in their mouth without much thought. If I could recommend just one resource for Zone info, I'd say check out the Crossfit Journal, issue #21.. While you're at it, check out the free issue which outlines "What is Fitness". It breaks down quite a bit of the info you'll need to start getting back in shape.

Along those lines, I would start hitting up the WOD on the main page, scaling as necessary. This will improve your cardiovascular fitness without negatively effecting your strength, power, stamina, etc. like distance running has a tendency to do. Don't hesitate to sshoot me an email if you need any specific suggestions or have any questions.
