Bashing My Shoulder
« on: March 15, 2006, 07:41:35 PM »
I have searched but I haven't found and real answer on how I can stop bashing my should when I roll. I get the whole roll diagonally nearly perfectly and I don't hit my hip or my head, it's only my shoulder that gets constantly bashed into the extremely hard grass. I have already seen the Roll forward video on putfile, that did help other stuff but not my shoulder. Also, I have already seen the David Belle Roll Analysis Video, but that didn't help either. It also doesn't help that I roll over my left shoulder and not my right. I would have posted in one of the other topics, but I didn't want to revive a topic from two months ago.

collapse into it with your legs, have your body somewhat tucked, and roll diagonally, and you shouldn't hit. the roll should start on the meat of your shoulder, or maybe just a little forearm action. if you had come to the roll workshop ... ;)

I live in a "Parkour Wasteland". I mean that as in there are only 2 traceurs that I know within 3 hours of where I live and since I'm 15 and don't have a drivers license I can't really travel anywhere. Thanks for the advice I'll try that out tomorrow and see if it helps.

I dont know if you do this already, but try rolling along the outside of your arm.  I used to have the same problem as you, but now I'm doing ok.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are saying, pyr02, but it sounds like you need to "throw your shoulder" into your roll more. That is, your shoulder blade should really be the first part of your back that touches the ground.

I have had a similar problem where I would hit the ground w/ my shoulder, and it would cause my clavicle area to be sore. What I found out was that using my hands to really absorb impact and to help position my body for a roll really helped. So perhaps think a/b that, too.

Well, I was practicing it today and I did the same thing. But I added more power to the roll by adding more force with my legs and I threw my should more in and it worked, I didn't bash my shoulder.
Well, I think I can do my landings and rolls right, I just need to combine them.

Do you live in a area close to tallahassee? Then we should run sometime.

Well I didn't get to try today because it snowed which turned the grass into mud. Hopefully it will be nice tomorrow so I can finally try.

I had the same problem.. I found it easier to get a few different rolls down on grass, no matter how right they felt, and then practice the most that felt the best on concrete.

I used to have that same problem so try not make the roll so compacted or youll kinda lean into your shoulder. So when you roll try to kind dive into it. Thats just my opinion though just try and let me know how it goes.

I made the same mistake, had to do a double take in a differnet thread, and delete ne of my posts.

I also did the same thing when practicing rolls. But, i found that i have little problem with my rolls if i use them when i need to. Instead of   just practicing rolls, i found i have to practice kong to rolls or things like that, where im actually using the roll.
hopefully that makes sense.
