Push-ups - one minute
« on: June 18, 2008, 07:25:43 AM »
For push ups we'll measure what could be considered a "strict" push up which is one "correct" way of doing them. Understand that this is one of hundreds of varieties and is picked for no particular reason other than consistent measure.

Lay flat on the ground. Bring your hands alongside your body (no more than 2" away from either side) up to where your thumbs are closest in line with your nipples. Press up, arms extending fully, no other body part moves or flexes - in other words torso is perfectly rigid and straight. When you touch down everything will still be in alignment.

Measure as many reps as possible in one minute.

Question: elbows to the side (as in parallel to the side of your body) or elbows out(as in perpendicular to the side of your body)? this definitely makes a difference for me, as I can do a lot of pushups with my elbows out, but very few with my elbows to the side.

This should be in discussion.

But to answer your question to the side or at 45 degrees from the torso is best (much like correct technique for bench press). Elbows out aka 90 degrees is good.. for shoulder problems if you like those. Depending on the health of your shoulders you may never develop problems but it's better to do them the right way.
