Internet forums are full of armchair warriors and keyboard know-it-alls. At APK we strive to keep a particularly bullshit free forum, politely pointing out when information comes from the wrong end of someone's body, and working hard to keep posts and ideas on topic and at discussion vs. argument levels. The members of this forum are generally very bright and very courteous - and make this a fairly easy task most of the time. I think in our history we've had only 3 or 4 permanent bannings, not bad for 36,000 members!

At the Parkour Generations seminar hosted by Parkour Horizons last month Muhammad brought up a great point - nickanmes on the internet can be used to hide behind and just perpetuate the BS.

The real parkour community are the people who go to jams, the people out training, and the people who are helping out all the time (yes, even on teh internets). We should all act on the forums as we would when speaking to people face to face.

Muhammad's suggestion was that people use their real names on the forum. I think it's a great idea. CrossFit has had that as a mandate form day 1 and it has made clear impact on their forums.

I think it is usually easy enough to pick out who is spouting BS and who is genuine, but this step certianly can't hurt.

You can change the way your name appears in the forums by going to your profile >> account related settings and changing

Name:

This is the displayed name that people will see.

Then your posts will show your name. I think this is a positive step towards identifying yourself in a way that gives accountability. Posting responsibly gives you credibility.

Thanks Muhammad for a great suggestion that will surely help the community!

great idea.  and if anyone wants to still have your running name up there just put it in parenthesis like I'm doing.  (not that I'm being super original with that, but it works).  That way at meets and events people might still recognize your parkour name if they've read your entries.

No, please do not put your name in quotes or parenthesis or anything. We let you guys change your own titles for a reason! Use the title! Please read this thread: http://www.americanparkour.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,159/topic,15449.0/

Yeah, I think I've been doing this since I helped spawn teh Interwebz back with Al in nineteen-ought-ninety-one. Handles are lame. Be your own brand.

There's damn well only one Salil Maniktahla on the planet, so if there's a privacy concern here, uh, I encountered it long ago.

And to the point about your persona being bigger than your name, well...flip it around. There's no reason why your actual name can't be associated with parkour, software development, bukkake, or whatever the hell it is you spend your time doing.

Except in Skipper's case. Who the hell would call you "Billy," anyway?  :D I say change your name!

Works for me, my old UN was TheLife. but I read this and I guess it works, doesn't matter to me.
I have always never really cared, internet anonymity has always been around, and always will be.

So I never bothered to derive from my old names I chose years ago, but if more people here think this is better, I don't mind adapting :P

Sorry as I've only just joined your website today from the UK, but I'm not sure about everyone but due to thr nature of my future job I have to be ware of how my professsion is being seen based on my personal life. Which from the professionals stand point I shouldnt even have a facebook account.

HOW DOES THIS EFFECT ME?

Well if someone knows me because I use my real name then I have to curb my enthusiam for Parkour and become some sort of neutral, goody goody. However using the name Poetry (because i like to be creative and write poetry) means I can be myself without fear of anyone making a connection to me. I do agree that people shouldnt hid behind nicknames but for some its the only way to protect their professional statue  ;D

Yeah, this kind of behavior was actually observed by the creators of the web comic Penny Arcade about 4 years ago and coined the "Greater Internet F*ckwad Theory" (GIFT).  I think this (not kid-safe?) comic describes it best:

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19/

I agree that using real names is a good way to promote more accountability (and hope I haven't been too much of a f*ckwad up until now) and will follow suit in changing my display name.

Where do these people come from?   L-O-L

I like this idea, they need to implement it across the board on the internet. We'd have less guys like the one below.

Excerpt:
monkeysk8er33 (Youtube.com) commenting on other people's parkour/freerunning vids

This shit is so amatuer. I'm better than these guys.
I am a traceur idiot.
Do you know what the deffinition of traceur is?
n. A practitioner of the sport/art of parkour. Is a skilled runner and jumper. Often has the ability to perform various acrobatic techniques, but not necessarily so.
I AM a traceur, dumbass.
You think he's high and mighty because he's made a few decent videos? I've seen 12 year olds with more skill then these guys. I really hope this isn't their best. It's pathetic. And you can't say shit unless you have something to show, so shut the f#ck up loser.
I respect people who deserve it. And the kind of traceur you speak of is something you'll never be, neither will I. Your talking about people like Xin, and David Belle. Most traceurs aren't so "honorable". And your deffinition of honorable probably isn't right. Should I pull the dictionary out again? I really don't want to, but I will if you aren't done being an idiot. I could pull up igorant too. You'd fit into that one pretty well.
They're the only ones who truely know what they're doing. David Belle especially seeing as how he created the f#cking sport jackass! And 98% of the "community" are useless. Most "traceurs" can't even call themselves such.
Go for it. Your just going to be wasting your time. I talk to Mr. Belle more than any of you do. He has acknowledged my abilities. I have connections dumb ass.

<end quotes>

There really is something to that F*ckwad theory afterall.

Guys like these calling themselves traceurs is the last thing PK/FR needs.

see i think that if someone decides to put a "nickname" as their name they can at least do it right and put it in between their real name.

Hi. My name is Jesse Duvall
make nickname is Spazz
therefore my name on the internet is Jesse "SPAZZ" Duvall

I like the idea. However, for my case, I'm too used to going under a nickname with the added bonus that I'm cautioned about giving out my actual name online. I'm still young, so I and my parents are pretty worried about my safety practically anywhere on the net. At least one of the usernames that I use frequently is a clever collaboration of my real name and a name I like very much. The most I could do is definitely put my actual first name under my avi (Alyssa is a common enough name where you can't really stalk me anyway. There's at least a few girls about my age nonetheless that has the same first name as me where I live. ::)).

So should I just change mine to Grant Fitzgerald?
