Phojo interested in Parkour story
« on: May 29, 2008, 01:59:55 PM »
Howdy,

My name is David Hewitt and I'm in the US Navy taking a photo-journalism course at Ft. Meade Maryland. For the class I would very much like to do a story on the local Parkour scene, having been interested in it for a while now. I think that Parkour lends itself to photography and journalism in an artistic way and also the history and growth of the art in America.

I was wondering if someone who was 1.) physically and technically sound, and 2.) had much to say concerning Parkour was interested in being a contact and eventual subject matter for my story. I don't have the exact dates, but I believe mid to late June would be the time that I could come by, observe, and ask a few questions if no one minds.

Thank you very much and I hope to hear from someone soon! The close to Ft. Meade the better!

If you repost this in the "MidAtlantic" board, it'll get more views.

That being said, there are a lot of people who train at Anne Arundle Community College off of Ritchie Highway, and there are also a lot of people who practice in the DC/Metro area. I'll be away from early june to early august, so I can't really help you, but if you repost I'm sure you'll have plenty of volunteers.

Joe,

I actually teach martial arts at a studio just outside Ft. Meade.  If you want to contact me about getting something set up you are more than welcomed to (email is in my profile, phone is four 4 three - 8 eight 3 - one 1 two 9).  That way you can get an interview, and then perhaps go to a local training session or jam to get your photos.  We've actually had quit a few of your colleagues come and do reports on my master for their project as he is retired military.

In regards to proximity to Ft. Meade, you basically have a group 20 minutes away in Glen Burnie, and a group 20 minutes away in Arnold at the Anne Arundel Community College (as Dud pointed out).  I would recommend checking out the people who train at the community college, just because I am more familiar with them.

There is going to be a jam there tomorrow, which should be a good event because a group of traceurs from DC are coming up to check the college out.

Good luck on your project.
