There are many ways in which a traceur can improve balance, coordination, strength, control, and more. One good way to do this is to incorporate unnecessarily difficult or “inefficient” movements into your training regimen. By turning walls, rails, and more into direct pathways, you can create some very difficult scenarios to maneuver through. Experiment with different methods to move across obstacles for an extended period of time. Read more for some ideas and some of the skills they work.
- Walk along a rail. (Balance, stabilizer muscles throughout the body.) - Crawl along a rail on all fours (Balance, stabilizer muscles throughout the body, endurance, body awareness.) - Do quadrupedal movement on stairs and over and along all different obstacles. (Strength, endurance, body awareness.) - Hang, shimmy, and hop along the edges and overhangs of walls. (Upper body strength, endurance.) - Climb up difficult things. (Strength, endurance, problem solving, creativity.) - Climb laterally along stone or rock walls. (Strength, endurance.) - Move through trees. (Strength, body awareness.) - Walk around and over stuff in a handstand. (Strength, endurance, balance.) - And much more! Be creative! There are infinite ways to move over and along obstacles. Adapt to your environment and see what challenging movements you can come up with. There are many different ways to incorporate these movements into your training. Just like everything else in parkour, you will progress and hopefully the improvement will carry over into other aspects of your parkour training. Due to a back injury, which seems to be improving quickly with some much needed rest, I will not be in a video concerning this month’s drill. Because of this, my training partner, Strydzz, who is a skilled traceur himself, has demonstrated some of the movements we incorporate into our training. Click here to see the video. |
