American Parkour is proud to be a CrossFit affiliate. We feel there is no greater combination than functional movement combined with functional fitness.

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is an exercise modality based on constantly varied functional movements done at continuously high intensity. What?! CrossFit is a way of exercising that emphasizes functional fitness. It does not specifically train for any activity, but for all activities. CrossFit states that a solid base of General Physical Preparedness (GPP) gained through high-power efforts will improve performance in any activity, and they're proving it.

How does this relate to Parkour?

Parkour is functional movement in your environment using only your body and the obstacles around you. There is no form of fitness that does not directly impact performance in Parkour, and as such, the 10 physical skills that CrossFit addresses; Cardiorespiratory Endurance, Strength, Flexibility, Stamina, Speed, Power, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy – directly correlate to increased ability in Parkour, and also benefit everyday life.

Sign me up, what's the secret?

The secret is that there are no secrets. CrossFit workouts are grueling, they are designed to break even elite level athletes, and therefore should be approached with an open mind and a bit of caution – caution that you scale the exercises to meet or just barely exceed your current limits, not rush headlong and end up getting hurt (sound familiar?). Their workouts are based on tried, tested, and proven exercises and combinations that will make you more fit.

What about APK WOD?

Jesse Woody who creates the APK WOD is CrossFit level 2 certified, he uses his extensive knowledge to create a program that is well rounded, scalable, and beneficial, but neither the APK workouts or the Crossfit WOD should be seen as an entire scope of possible programming. There is an astounding amount  of fitness information at CrossFit, all of which  fits within the scope of the Crossfit tenants of functionality, intensity and variance  It is our opinion that anyone serious about fitness should be heading over to CrossFit to see what they are discovering; that many of  our long-held fitness myths are easily shattered  through real-world functional testing- that is the continual proof of their program's true efficacy.

Usually exercises concentrate on building muscles (cross-section of the muscle) or increasing maximal strength of the muscle ( i.e the amount of contraction which the muscle can go through under electric current provided by the brain ) .
Cross-Fit in general concentrates on building
Strength as well as provide s training to the brain which will allow you to react better to physical challenges than just plain strength.
e.g lifting a weight increases muscle strength
but lifting a weight while balancing on a health ball
increases balance, core-stabilizers, and strength.
This collectively is known as functional strength as it can be used in real life situations which may not be tailor made for just brute strength. I call it "Smart Strength" .
