It's been said many times "you can't learn parkour by talking about it". I disagree - to an extent.

Forums are a place to have conversations with people. Since many people on internet forums have never met, they somehow feel that this should be different than a conversation they would have IRL. We'd like to treat our forums differently, and have a community which is respectful of each other, as if they were in the same room having a conversation.

It's been said many times "you can't learn Parkour by talking about it". I disagree - to an extent.

I think there are many concepts, philosophical points, and even technical details that can be picked up from reading. Otherwise why would we write anything about any sport / art / physical activity, we could just say "Just go out and do it to get better" ... personally I find that attitude somewhat less than helpful, but there is still a lot of truth in it ... you need to go out and train to learn anything about Parkour, you can't learn it from a book, from a tutorial, from a website, even from a coach or trainer, these things are all aids in your journey, not crutches or things to push yourself along.

So where the hell is he going with this??

I've stated my case for why we should talk about Parkour (and other activities) ... and I've stated my case on how I feel an internet forum should be run, based on respect and the golden rule.

To help people out, I've put together a few simple questions to ask yourself before hitting "Post" ...

Have I added information which is different than what is already here?
Have I done so in a way which is informative and helpful without being condescending?
Am I being considerate and understanding of other people's views, even if I disagree?
Am I adding value to this conversation?

If you can say yes to all four of those, then you will be a great member of the community, and people will learn to value and respect what you say.

If you want achieve "rock star" status in no time, throw in:

Could this be done better with a Private Message?

Did I hit spell check?

Now, on to the Reverse Ranking system.

Please remember, these are for entertainment purposes only, although I do firmly believe that one can be enlightened only through silence:

Zen Master: up to 50 posts

Sage: Up to 100 posts

Sensei: Up to 200 posts

Gakusei: Up to 300 posts

Flaptrap: Up to 400 posts

Babbling Idiot: 500 posts and over

These are subject to change at any time, but we'll probably always keep some sort of "reverse scheme" :)

I like that list of questions to ask yourself before posting.

As for the reverse scheme, brilliant.

Someone who joins up will automatically be a zen master? That's quite the optimism you have, mark ... :grin

I dislike the concept of reverse ranking, simply because it implies that anyone who posts a lot is giving out useless information. Such a thing is perhaps valuable from a "asking question" standpoint, but anyone who is "answering questions" on a regular occasion is then being reverted to "babbling idiot"? Doesn't sound much good to me. Generally you'll find it's also the people who post a lot of stupid stuff who don't actually care about their rank.

But hey, that's just me being analytical and critical. I do that all the time.

The rest of the post is good though. I agree with most of it. =)

I would have to disagree, I would say that the people who are posting for the right reasons don't think twice about the ranking system. I know for a fact that I will be a babbling idiot before I know it, and I think it suits just fine!

have the stars go down and the name go up, or have the name changed to whatever you want to when it receeds to babbling idiot, lol and the stars get to one.

well what about making it proportional to the amount of time spent in the forums otherwise, babbling idiot will just come with time over post frequency. Like an average post of # per week = zen master, another# per week = sage
and so on.

heh - "It is better to let people think you are a fool than to open your mouth and give them proof."

I agree with the post frequency idea, but I doubt it's really possible. How about having some kind of newbie ranking up to 30 posts or something? So maybe "Initiate" then the next rank would be "Zen Master" and hold that until 100 posts. This way, people with honest, valuable things to say won't get "ranked down" too soon. Over a couple of years, 50 posts really isn't much, even if you take the Mr. Ed approach.

i don't how i feel about the reverse ranking. Because if you do put a lot of useless stuff then you pretty much are a babling idiot, and then u don't deserved to have a rank. But i don't see why the "idiot" part is necessary. It could be like "Babling..." something else. IDK.
