"Just because you get it for free, doesn't mean it doesn't carry a price." --Mark Toorock--
There is so much discussion amongst the various websites involved with the "Parkour Community" about the efficacy or lack thereof involved in weight-training modalities as opposed to bodyweight calisthenics. Though I made my opinion known in THIS ARTICLE , the question still arises; "won't bodyweight only training be enough for Parkour?" In the end, the decision as to what type of training you undertake is determined by your goals and your motivation, but to me, a broad-range of fitness and abilities not only makes sense as a traceur, but also as a motivated human being. In the "What Is Fitness?" Issue of the Crossfit Journal, Coach Glassman approaches this topic with his usual penchant for concise explanation. I consider this to be a must-read for anyone involved in the pursuit of greater skill and fitness. By the end, the basic assumption can be made; "You can become very fit through gymnastic skills, and very fit through weight lifting, but neither can match the combination of both in a varied and random fashion." I guess the idea for the weekend is this, never get stuck thinking one way of life, or one training modality is "right" at the expense of all others being "wrong". When you realize that broad-range skill is the spice that creates a useful program, you will be able to actively search for the tools that allow you to expand indefinitely throughout your lifetime. |
