There are many ways in which a traceur can improve balance, coordination, strength, control, and more. One good way to do this is to incorporate unnecessarily difficult or “inefficient” movements into your training regimen. By turning walls, rails, and more into direct pathways, you can create some very difficult scenarios to maneuver through. Experiment with different methods to move across obstacles for an extended period of time. Read more for some ideas and some of the skills they work.

-         Walk along a rail. (Balance, stabilizer muscles throughout the body.)

-         Crawl along a rail on all fours (Balance, stabilizer muscles throughout the body, endurance, body awareness.)

-         Do quadrupedal movement on stairs and over and along all different obstacles. (Strength, endurance, body awareness.)

-         Hang, shimmy, and hop along the edges and overhangs of walls. (Upper body strength, endurance.)

-         Climb up difficult things. (Strength, endurance, problem solving, creativity.)

-         Climb laterally along stone or rock walls. (Strength, endurance.)

-         Move through trees. (Strength, body awareness.)

-         Walk around and over stuff in a handstand. (Strength, endurance, balance.)

-         And much more!

Be creative! There are infinite ways to move over and along obstacles. Adapt to your environment and see what challenging movements you can come up with. There are many different ways to incorporate these movements into your training. Just like everything else in parkour, you will progress and hopefully the improvement will carry over into other aspects of your parkour training.

Due to a back injury, which seems to be improving quickly with some much needed rest, I will not be in a video concerning this month’s drill. Because of this, my training partner, Strydzz, who is a skilled traceur himself, has demonstrated some of the movements we incorporate into our training. Click here to see the video.

I've often said that "Practicing Parkour" means purposely taking the least efficient route in the most efficient way, that way when you want to choose the most efficient route, it should be easier than what you did in training.

It's really about finding the most effecient movement possible for any number of possible paths, whether they are the most effecient or not. This prepares you for the day that you are forced to travel in that unexpected direction. Doing an underbar on a rail that you could just as well vault isn't really that effecient, but it prepares you for the time you find a spot that an underbar is the only possible movement. Nice ideas in there, keep up the training everybody!

A traceur should train and be ready for any possible eventuality. By purposely preparing (both mentally and physically) for any number of situations (both simple and difficult) you grow further as a traceur.

Hey, sup ppl! I'm relatively new to the world of parkour, and I know that there aren't a lot of gyms to train at in the States. So I am wondering if anybody knows about any in Colorado, preferably Denver? It would be a great help to me if you could let me know any info on any local gyms that help train parkour. I've mostly been doing stuff myself, and with friends, I'm the head of the Stunt-17 Crew in Denver. We also do paintball, if anyone wants to check us out someitme, we're not sponsored yet, but we plan on practicing parkour, and using paintball and parkour as training elements for each other. Well, later!

I didn't mean that Practicing Parkour was only that, just that what I described was a way of practicing.

Hey Stunt 17, you're in luck, Denver has a great scene, as Titan suggested, check out the CO forums.
